Choices.. Choices (Bass)

So, I need a bass to record some tracks for the upcoming RPM Challenge.

I wanted something that just says "ARRRR!"

So off to the internet I went, in search of booty (and basses)

Image from Rondo (I dig the abalone-inlayed knobs, but not much else)

OR,

On second thought, maybe I'll get one of those Hello Kitty basses like Aen has.

Thoughts? :haha:

The SX is a better bass. Just trust me on this. I've owned 3 SX basses, and they're surprisingly good.

And the pirate is so fucking cool. :haha:

If it was an all-black color scheme I'd be inclined to agree about the SX. The red is kind of annoying.

Dunno what I'll go with. Tempted to try to find some other way to make my nice-ish guitar sound like a bass, instead of trying to make a cheap bass sound nice next to my geetar. (Micro POG?)

(Edit: Err. So either this all came off as trolling or the DE bboards are a lot more quiet than I remember. Sorry. :idk: )

+1, if you're into short scales.

I like the red on the SX. It's cheap enough that you could just paint the red...

Also, they have a Gibson Voodoo finish. Hehehe.

It's hard to see. Some people on Talkbass got them, and they had red in the grain of the wood.

I have a total Vampire/Pirate fetish.

I guess I found a relative to borrow a bass from. I still haven't asked him but he's offered to give me one of "the broken ones in the attic".. as he spent the 90s in the DC hardcore scene, not sure what to expect, but I'm finally gonna take him up on it. Hopefully there's something non-left-handed or I'll have to learn to play left handed bass for RPM Challenge in Feb, as well.

On a completely different, and entirely more serious note, I'd like to get another overdrive pedal, either to cascade with my modded Sparkle Drive or on its own. The Sparkle Drive does an incredible clean just-overdriven sound, but as I'm not playing into tube amps anymore, I'd much rather find something with a nice old blues slide / lead overdrive. Thinking a hair less gain than ZZ Top?. Current contenders are another TS9-type pedal with different mods, or, if I can find the cash quick, a Fulltone OCD. Thoughts on this? :>

I have a Bad Monkey and it's a pretty bassy tubescreamer type thing. I quite like it, but I still havent found the "Real Tube OD in a pedal".

On talkbass the new thing is the VT Bass...but I'm not a fan.

followup on the OD pedal hunt:
Ended up getting a Danelectro Cool Cat Drive after a trip to the local store a few blocks down from my apartment. Loved it from the first moment I plugged it in.

Turned out later, on some internet perusing, that the circuit is pretty close to an OCD. Not bad for $25. (The other Cool Cat pedals are probably ripoffs of boutique circuits too. I think that's kind of cheap of them, but also awesome for me: more good-sounding pedals for cheap. I've got my eyes on the Vibe and Tremolo..)

Now that superbright blue LED is on 90% of the time in my signal chain:

3 basses I would recommedn the shit out of, in order of affordability:

Image

Hello Kitty!
Cheap, easy to play, provided its not fucked up. Bad pickup. fine for recording, I reckon, but it's a squier start pickup in there.

HOLY SHIT. This bass blew me away. Can't saya bad thing about it, except maybe you will get in trouble from all the ladies wanting to bone you after they see you wiht it? $350!!!

Image

And obviously I would recommend the mustang bass, but that is getting expensive!

My bassist used this, and I think it is just dandy. Not to mention it gets a lot of compliments....unlike the hello kitty strat.

I played an American made Zone bass once. It was mind-numbingly awesome. The general feel of it was... fuck. Sadly, it was just too expensive for me.

But OMG was it amazing.
