A couple random questions about pedal placement

Thinking about re-arranging my board. Like, tearing everything off and going with a wildly different layout. I've got a lot incoming, so I can't perfectly plan out everything. So I've got some random questions:

  • Where would you put a phaser in your chain?
  • For those of you with bigger boards (in my case, the Pedaltrain Pro), how do you squeeze more pedals on there without stomping the knobs off of the row below? Or do you only rock 2 rows of pedals? (which is what i'm currently doing) (Edit: realization that the combination TTT & FY2 that skully is building me is gonna be HUUUGE and I want it in the front row. gah.)
  • How do you deal with all of the pedals nowadays that have momentary switches for stuff, or tap tempos, and basically all need to be in the front row for easy tapping with your toe? Or not an issue for you? (I can hit them, but I'd prefer access to all of them.)
  • What about running effects wherever they'll fit rather than visually right-to-left in the signal chain order? Confuse you? (Or, I guess, you set them up that way so you know what order they're in.. fuck the next guy who tries to stomp on your board, he shouldn't be touching it.)
  • Lastly, does anyone actually use the tuner-out on an Ernie Ball Vol Jr? Do you keep your tuner pedal on all the time? I'm thinking about doing this just so that I can get my tuner out of the way and mount it up by the top of my board, and then not have to stomp on it anymore.

    Also, do you like cheese or bacon more?

Bacon is tasty! I put my phaser after dirt/fuzz and effects like delay/trem can either go in front or behind (just depends on personal preference really). I've got three rows of pedals on my PT Pro and I'd say the 2nd row is the hardest to hit the foot switches.

My effects order goes from right to left (easier to wire but mess around to find a placement that makes sense to you). My tuner is at the front of my chain and it's only to tune and to use as a kill switch between songs. I like your idea though of having it on all the time and using the tuner out option. And thinking about it none of my pedals in the middle row have any momentary switches or tap tempo (all top row pedals for me).

To get the pedals in the middle work on pointing your foot down so you're hitting the switches with the tip of your shoe instead of the bottom flat part.

You answered all the questions! You deserve bacon! :animal:

Phaser went after dirt, but before the second round of delay the last time I had one. Not sure where it will go this time, too many new pieces that need sorting out.

The only pedal with a momentary that I use is the Lunar Echo's take-off, cause fuck tap tempo.

Pedals are put in order of the chain, but I swap stuff out a fair bit and that just makes it easier. If I ever settle on something a bit more permanent I'd give it more thought.

Don't have a tuner or a EB volume so no comment.

Fuck bacon. Cheese goes with everything.

As for your issues with precision stomping, go out and learn this;

Phaser after dirt and before verb for sure, I don't use phaser and delay simultaneously so I put it before but you may want to experiment there.
On the PT Pro I put the chain right to left but zigzag up and down so the tap tempo and frequently used stuff is on bottom row and others on top. Can't stand putting pedals horizontally so I only use 2 rows but the top one has vol/expression to fill out some of the space.
As for tuners, never needed one cos I use locking trems so can't comment there.

Oh, and I vote cheese (vegetarian here).

first of all let me say i prefer bacon WITH cheese

endangered species here - phaser BEFORE dirt... except for Small Stone based stuff, that would go after OD but before Fuzz

i only rock 2 rows, but if i needed to, i COULD squeeze some in the middle row i guess... but yeah, it might be too crowded so i'd kick the settings all the time

i don¨t have tap tempo, but i'd not be afraid to have it in the second row... i don't wear boots or big shoes for gigging, so i'd say i can be pretty accurate with the tip of my shoe

i'm trying to line them as they go and then jump to the second row

for the record - the bottom row goes Booster->phaser->od->ring mod/bit crusher->fuzzy distortion
top row is flanger/delay/vibrato->tremolo->delay->reverb->tuner

This thread assumes one likes both bacon and cheese.

Phaser after dirt
Bacon after cheese

So the real thing i guess I'm getting at is: phaser before or after delay? I tend to put all my modulation effects before delay, then tremolo, then reverb. (I left the original question vague to get more responses.)

Also, I don't eat either bacon or cheese, but I am fine with the fact that you guys do. (I can't believe people get upset over stupid stuff like that.). Thank you for participating in my survey. I now have decided that the next WI-based ILF meetup should have both bacon AND cheese.

I'd say wedge the phaser in between 2 delays so you have the option
If you can

:idea: I do have this option with my new setup. Thanks!

I use a few of these on my board.

The sides take up room if the pedal is MXR sized. If the pedal is wider no loss of space.

I always put modulation at the end, after all dirt and delays. Even when doing the maxed-feedback delay takeoff thing, I still like being able to have a phaser or flanger swoosh over it all.
