He shows all the settings and says at the beginning what amp and guitar he is using.

What more could you need to know? :idk:

I think he said he was playing an "asshat" Telecaster.

I saw that, but I don't think it's the amp or the guitar. Unless it's the MFD pickups. That sounds super fuzzed out.

The amp sounds like it's already pretty close to driving itself, so that'll give a distortion pedal quite a bit of added heaviness to it. I'd recommend trying a boost or a light drive in front of your Rat if it's not giving you the heavy heavs you want.

Are you using a rat with LED clipping like the turbo rat has? I think that is key...

This. The Rat's doing the heavy lifting, but it's far from a clean amp.

hmmm... maybe it's because I have a Rat 2. I'm guessing that's an older turbo with the lm308?

To me, that's just what a Turbo Rat sounds like when it's played through an already overdriving amp.

And yes, there is quite a big difference in tone between the Rat 2 and the Turbo. The Rat 2 is gnarlier, and the Turbo is woolier. I always assumed that it was because of the LED clipping in the Turbo.

Sounds exactly like a certain setup I had. I have a solid state amp, mind you. But the SS/BS Mini into a MXR Distortion + with the bias on the Mini rolled back.... Magic.

I think it's a lot of this, drive pedals can sound very different into a driven amp. Stacking the rat with another drive pedal might get you close to that.

Welp, looks like I might need a Distortion +.

In all honesty, I have a Ben Adrian Kowloon Walled Bunny which is modded specifically to be a semi-broken vintage circuit Ross/DOD 250/MXR Distortion +. Though, you can't really go wrong with a Distortion + as is.
