So in the vein of a lot of threads I've started, in order to learn all your secrets

I want to know:
What's something about playing guitar, bass, or music in general that you can explain in one post here, that you think is important?
Really looking forward to your answers, because you guys rock!

Trying to rip a sweet solo and you have problems with strings ringing out? Fold up a piece of paper and shove it under the fretboard around the first fret to deaden the strings.
Or ask Yngwie Malmsteen for advice.

When I attended a League of Crafty Guitarists concert, one of the guitarists was playing "silence" for the entire concert.

Use fuzz. No explanation needed.

In a book I was reading, one of the musicians spent an entire year only playing whole notes (on sax).. even when playing with others.
Interesting constraint, to say the least.

I've also seen people use a hair band/scrunchie up near the 3rd fret

Necrobump because I don't think it can be said enough.
style > skill
and by "style" I mean making creative, interesting, and cool sounding music that people will want to hear instead of the same old, same old.

It's the spaces between the notes that matter.

Stop wanking.
Rests are really fucking important in music.
Play a counter-melody every now and then.
Contrary to what was said above, a key change or time signature change can be an awesomely jarring experience to hear/watch.
Fuck your words, try to convey a fucking mood or an emotion already without telling me about it.
