Hey guys. Looking for recommendations on solos that I should learn. inb4 "learn scales and write your own damn solos, don't copy anyone", I'm trying to increase my understanding of how other people solo and the kinds of phrases they use.

So what would you recommend? Looking for all sorts of stuff, especially demonstrating different techniques and approaches, using scales in other tunings, etc.

tangerine - led zeppelin, its easy and fun to play and makes you think you are jimmy page as you make a duck face and shake your guitar

I realy like the call and response solo in Coheed and Cambria's Welcome Home, it was one of my first and still makes me feel good to play. My very first solo was Shook me all night long, however. You should probably learn Stranglehold as well, or La Grange. As should I.

Yeah, I learned La Grange a few weeks back from some youtube video that was good.

... I have a feeling I just need to go through Led Zep albums in order and learn all the songs.

EDIT: being the excitable jackass that I am, I skipped the whole alternate tunings angle to the request, and just went for solos that I dig. Sorry 'bout that.

It's funny, while I love a good solo or ten, I have a hard time coming with suggestions off the top of my head. But scanning through my iTunes has brought up a few ideas. I love the solos that skirt the line between hard rockin' and skronk, or solos that have their own internal structure rather than just straight shredding. If I could, I would learn:

Mudfuzz, bending the notes in the scale at one fret rather than going up the neck to each note? Or something else in there? He's demonstrating quite a few techniques around 4:30.

I'm not big into shredding, I like slower shit that has more "feel" to it.

I love this one because Harrison wanted his guitar to sound like it was crying. He realized he couldn't do it and got Clapton to do it for him instead (1:55 and then again over the last minute of the song)

21st Century Schizoid Man is a good one also. and any of Belew's solos, just for some out there thinking. also Cortez the Killer

i;d also recommend learning to play some sax solos on guitar also. especially Coltrane and dudes in the spiritual jazz movement. they make you think about note expression WAY more than any/most guitarists, imo

ESPECIALLY the long solo on the outro!
