Tap Tempo vs Knobs vs Expression Pedals

Whatcha think? I like tap tempo usually. But expression pedals are real fun, to put it shortly. I find it hard to match the speed I want with just knobs, especially ones hard to turn with your feet. I kinda wished everyone used MXR knobs... And with delay! turning the knob can sometimes put those delays in an uncomfortable out of tuneness that's not always what I'm looking for.
But I play a lot of stuff that is based of the tempo of the effect but whateva. So tap tempo really works for me. The hard thing is, sometimes, great sounding pedals don't have it and it usually ends up being a dealbreaker since I can't afford multiples of the same type of pedal. :snax: Anyway, I been looking at the tap Semaphore and the new way huge delay among some others. Anyway, pedals are just fun! :yay: :yay: :yay:

Tap temp seems overrated to me. In fact, i dont like it one bit.

I have two delay with tap tempo.
And to be honest, it's a feature that I never use. I prefer knobs.

Go with what sound best for you.

It depends on how you want to use the effect I suppose. If you want to use specifically rhythmic delays and trem patterns then it's definitely something to look into, but if it's not something you're using all that much, you could leave it behind. Also, if you can get a pedal that has expression pedal capabilities you can reign it in approximately with your ear and tweak it while playing :)

i really want a catalinbread semaphore...seems like it can do just about anything tremolo related

Yeah dude. That seems like one with all da faytures and a good sound. Which I think is what I'm gonna be aiming for. The new pussy d delay seems like that too.

But yeah, I like a lot of that rhythmic stuff so I think tap might be pretty important for me. But I don't know. I'll have to sleep on this!

I really like having tap for delay, but when it's come to trems, I can see expression pedal capabilities being far superior to tap. Like everyone's said, it's all personal.

I had the non-tap version of the Semaphore, it was pretty awesome. I'd love to try the tap version, but I do hear that tapping trem can be rather difficult to pull off, as just a little variation can really mess things up.

Yeah, that's what I've heard too. But I think it would be nice for squarey chop stuff or for just playing by yourself and being lazy without reaching down to turn stuff.
I love the idea of the shape knob though. Seymour Duncan has their shape knob trem but they're pedals are just... so ugly. I would try one if I get the chance though.

fyi, bros. I kinda just edited the original post and changed things up a little bit so I don't sound like a whiny biyotch! -- "I can't find/decide on a pedal!" :picard:

The Music PCB Tap Tremolo kit has pretty much everything the tap tempo Semaphore has and I'm sure you can have someone build it for far cheaper than $250. Not the same audio path, which I'm sure Catalinbread did super super well, but if you're not a huge stickler about it I'm sure you'd be fine either way.

Knobs are better. Expression is great for changes during playing without having to bend over. Add an Expressionator and even more options become available. Tap tempo is a waste, why not put some tonal destruction on that footswitch instead?

I use my empress tap trem often. It means I can use hard chop and stuff and not piss off the drummer and the rest of the band. What I love about the tap on that one is that it averages your taps, which allows you to get things tight. And it doesn't really restart the trem when you start tapping, so if we're playing a longer section with the trem (or recording) I'll tap in the tempo again halfway through the section to tighten things up. So. Awesome.
Same thing with my Proteus in step mode - (although I'm doesn't feel like it averages your tapping). Anything that is supposed to be really rhythmic should have tap I think. Delay for me is more of a background effect, and I like it when the delays don't fall on the beat, so there i don't care, but it's horses for courses.

I like delays to be more washy than rhythmic, plus I don't currently play in a band where I use any effects but dirt, so if I really want rhythmic delays then I can just do it with the knob. Trem is a trickier one, I do like super hard chopz in time, so if I was in a more FX-y band I'd probably get a tap trem. I'd still probably use it not in tempo most of the time anyway, because pfffft. Expression control is always fun!

Never been a fan of tap tempo. It is ten times easier for me to dial in a delay with a knob where I know the sweet spots. Besides, I play delay for the washiness most of the time.
In the event that I do need a rhythmic delay, I know pretty much exactly where to set a knob to get the right rhythm.
