... and buy a bass and a peavey mark iv and an ampeg fridge and go back to my musical roots.

guitar was first the string instrument i played, but i played bass (or switched off between bass and guitar) in every band i have been in (not that i have been in a band in the last bunch of years). i think i always fancied myself a "guitar player that was stuck playing bass", but have recently come to the idea that maybe i was a bass player that just happened to play guitar from time to time.

anyone else feel like this / switch their main focus from one instrument to another? i am not talking about walking away from the guitar forever, of course, just setting it aside and focusing on the low life...

Yeah I did exactly that years ago. Sold all my guitar stuff and bought a bass rig. Got me out of the rut I was in, and realized I was really a much better bass player than guitar player.
Took me a few more years to realize they weren't mutually exclusive though, and when I came back to guitar, picking up the bass for that time had made me a much better guitar player.

I started out on guitar as a teenager, but got recruited for bass and never looked back. Definitely realized that I felt more at home on bass, and was able to carve out musical space for myself that I just couldn't on guitar. Dunno if that counts, but there ya go.

I'm kinda in the same boat my duties in the band have been slowly migrating closer to the lower end and I'm now thinking of getting a proper bass rig...maybe its just been a long time coming.

I started out on guitar, got my first bass for a band because nobody else played bass (like 90% of bass players ever probably) and fucking loved it. Since then I've always been better on bass and tend to play bass in bands, but probably play guitar more by myself and buy all my pedals for guitar (all I need for bass is a Jazz and my amp because it's the shit).

Plus I learned to play double bass for a school jazz band and am probably technically better on that than on other instruments and love it more than anything, but I don't play that much because they're really big and I can't fit my upright in my student house. :(

But yeah, there's something about a bass, a tube amp and a sufficiently large cab that's just better than anything else.

Another guy that eventually made the switch from guitar to bass. When I picked up bass it was to still be musical whenever I just didn't feel like playing guitar. That eventually lead to me preferring bass to guitar and now I'm at the point where I consider myself a bassist who can play a bit of guitar.

Another Bass ---> Guitar ---> Bass player here. Years ago I got heavily into early electric blues and switched from bass to guitar. Once I realized that the last thing the world needed was another shitty blues guitarist I went back to bass. With bass I can drive a band, lay back and lock in with the drummer or use effects to create a percussive force, drones or sonic landscapes. Now I mainly use a guitar to write new material or as an alternate controller for my pedalboard. Plus, decent bassists are always in demand, just check any musicians classified boards.

i started out on guitar, but i've just recently started playing bass in the band i'm in. i really enjoy playing it, i get to rattle bones and move mountains...however, the scale-length is killing me and i kinda want to find a shorter scale bass or a bass vi to stay in my comfort zone.

at the end of the day i love guitar more, but playing bass is helping me learn how to be more receptive and rhythmic.

As long as there's fuzz, all will be well.

I started on cello, switched to guitar cause it was cooler and found I only played the bottom 3 strings any way so bought a bass.
Never looked back although one of these days I’m might spring for a set of cello strings to put on a Jazz just because I can.

I really sympathize with with fever606 here. I'm in the same boat, man. I can't manage to play my guitar and feel like comfortable anymore, but every time I pick up a bass, I feel at home. I could never sell my guitar, though, I'm way too attached, due to the work I've put into him. Most of my rig is aimed at bass, too. AMPEG Bass Stack, Fuzz works on anything, and I used an Eleca Wah that only really sounded on the guitar-mids/lows which sounds perfect on a bass.

I need to finish building that bass that was sent to me. Just need to route it :\

You guys take the low road, I'll take the high road.

I've been thinking of giving up guitar in favor of mandolin.

I started with guitar but immediately after I got a bass and have been playing both regularly, a good 50/50 now.
