BOSS Power Stack (ST-2) vs. Marshall Guv'nor (GV-2)

The matchup:

I'd be curious to hear people's opinions on these two because I was looking at the Power Stack and then realized (after watching some demos and really thinking about what both pedals do) that these are very similar pedals.

BOSS uses digital modeling to basically give you a "Marshall in a box" (wheras the Combo Drive is like a VOX in a box, from what I hear), and it morphs from "crunch" to pretty high-gain on the ultra setting.

Similarly, the Marshall Guv'nor IS a Marshall product, and people have described the lower gain sounds as a "Plexi", while it becomes more JCM-900 as you turn it up.

Reasonable minds can differ on any pedal, though I've heard a lot of people complain about the Guv'nor being a bit too muffled. My amp is a smaller VOX Valvetronix combo, however, so my primary goal is to avoid the shrill, harsh trebles on the higher volume. There is also apparently a simple clip modification you can do to the Guv'nor that really opens it up (clipping the C-22 node).

Note: After almost buying the Power Stack on like 10 different occasions, and having it fall through for one reason or another, I've got the Marshall GV-2 ordered on eBay. I've played the Power Stack at Guitar Center, but never even seen the GV-2 "in person" yet, so I had to try it out.

Thoughts?

I have a marshall jack hammer distortion, and its a really warm simulation of a high gain marshall amp. it does what it does pretty well, and when you dime the distortion down, it gets really nice, dirty, and round. works well with my guitars volume too.

I bet the Gov'nor acts the same way.

I had a guvnor it was pretty good
as good as any other marshall in a box I have tried

never had a power stack and haven't heard much about it, I do like the Govnor plus I always thought it sounded nice, honestly a distortion officer bukowski built completely destroyed it. I think it is a culture jam circuit that the good officer built.

That distortion is basically a Lovepedal Superlead, which is basically a Guv'nor

It was pretty rad though. It was the first pedal I ever built and I kinda want to make another one

From what I've read it seems like Marshall changed the second version and made it all lame? Why do they always have to do that? I haven't tried either version though.

It just occurred to me that if I clone a Lovepedal circuit multiple times it'll be like douche-ception. I just can't do it..

Ha, no, just a random handle I use. I'm new to the forums. Sorry!

Great comments above - for the guy who referenced the Marshall Jackhammer, that pedal looked very interesting also, though they advertise it as a higher-gain distortion largely for metal playing. I'm pretty happy with my BOSS MT-2 Metal Zone for that purpose. But the GV-2 Guv'nor looks like it could be a lot more versatile than that. Dialed down, it has a great classic rock (or even blues) crunch to it, but with the gain dimed, it gets fairly gnarly.

Props to Boss for adding multi-band EQ to more and more of their dirt boxes, but the GV-2 has those multi-knows that really allow you to dial in more low end. The smaller combo amps can be quite touchy with many distortion pedals, and while my Vox Valvetronix doesn't necessarily sound that great with the modeling presets they give you, it's an outstanding speaker that has proven to work well with pedals like the MT-2 and Fulltone OCD. I'm hoping I can add the GV-2 to that list.

I will post back with my impressions of the GV-2 once they get around to shipping it to me!
