Teach me about boosts...

I'm not a big fan of my dirt pedals right now and I kinda want to just throw them all out and start over. I'm thinking boosts, comp, light overdrives in place of what I have now (distortion, fuzz, comp). My amp has two channels, I keep them both right around breakup and just set the tone differently. I want a pedal to push me a little further into tubey overdrive. I don't need a ton of gain. Just a little sparkly breakup and then a good low-mid gain overdrive sound. I also want something to boost me quite a bit for solos cause mine always seem buried. A little dirt on it doesn't matter. My distortion was too much gain for just a bit of OD and I haven't gotten along with my comp ever.
I'm already planning to get a different compressor for light compression sometime in the future though and I definitely don't like to use my current one for boost + compression at the same time.

Will a clean boost get you a good amount of OD without being to loud? Would a light overdrive be better suited for my overdrive tone? And a boost for solos? Cause with all my peds with volume knobs, they just get louder and don't really add much breakup.

How much volume does a pedal need to boost to push you into overdrive? My comp, with the compression low and volume at max doesn't put much dirt on my tone. Should I worry about how many db's they can boost?

What is so special about certain boosts like the SHO or the EP booster? Don't you just want a volume increase?

Do dirty boosts just add grit and not volume like the EQD speaker cranker? Or are there ones that do both?

I would like to keep it simple, as in 1-3ish knobs, maybe. Something I can turn around with my feet, like most one knob boosts probably.
:?: And I know it's a bunch of questions but, boosts, as simple as they are, confuse me. I just don't get it. :picard: School me on it. What do you use for light gain and solo boosts.

Thanks ahead of time! :p

Screw you guys.

I<3Boosts ...

... and ...

... I<3Fuzz ...

and not much in between.

I'm a man of extremes.

zRob., you're asking too many questions at once. I'm unable to give you a general overview of boosts. There're too many things that're dependent on other things. Prime among them being your amp, the other pedals in your chain and the placement of those pedals. That's just for starters.

My suggestion: Buy some boost pedals and start fooling around with 'em. Lots and lots of boost pedals.

Don't worry about how many dBs of boost a pedal offers. I've found it's kind of relative. That being said, I keep wishing for louder and louder boosts.

I'm not just concerned with volume though, some boosts just sound better than others. Sometimes it's hard to tell how they'll react with your other gear without actually playing them with said gear. You may find yourself liking a boost which you never thought you would. It's funny that way.

The EP Booster is really transparent. The SHO adds some "sparkle" and clarity and is much louder.

I like both, but I sort of prefer the SHO. The Super Duper is cool because you can get some overdrive sounds with the master volume side and the normal boost for a solo boost or whatever, or you can have two levels of boost, or you can just have one stupidly loud boost.

Talk to Schlatte, he made me a boost that's pretty awesome. It goes from just a phat volume boost for solos to a crunchy fuzzy sound.

TASTE THE BACON!

yeh like chankgeez said, there's a lot of shit out there...
personally i really enjoy using my micro amp to either leave on to beef up the signal or engage during a solo. but i recently picked up a dr scientist reverberator and a tremolessence and besides sounding amazing, they also work as great clean boosts to boot. so between the 3 of us these, i place them in such an order to either bump my volume, beef up a signal, or before an overdrive/fuzzs to give it more hair.

In my experiences, Mellowtone boosts are the best boosts. They're kinda dirty, but, also can be clean (DURR CLEAN CHAN) but extremely musical, and have tons of dB on tap. Or at least, enough.

Thanks, guys. I don't even know why I can't grasp boosts. Gah! But the 2 in 1 looks pretty nice. I'm gonna do some more research folks.

I also super want a Blowing Up.

I love setting my amp juuust on the edge of breakup and then using pedals to push it over, and my favourite thing to use for that is a treble booster (specifically sparkle motion) set for a fuckton of volume boost and slight treble boost, it just gets the most awesome gnarly overdrive tone I've ever heard.

As far as boosts go, all I know is the best bang for your buck is definitely:

Suppose to work wonders for stuff like your tone and also make your sound super organic, as well as like make your overall playing what I can only describe as transparent.

Blowing up is so far beyond boost.
