Dream gear? Hands-on?

sooooooooo... i'm in Japan for a hinute. i don't go into music stores unless it's used/pedal stuff 'cause it's so expensive out here, but i did randomly see a shop and looked around and among a bunch of RIDIC stuff like custom Alembics, F-Basses, and Fedoras they fucking had.....

THAT'S FIVE FUCKING CARL THOMPSON'S. AND ONE OF THEM IS A GODDAMN 6 STRING FRETLESS RAINBOW LIKE LES'S. GOOD GAWD SHITTING DICK NIPPLES.

...... and me scared as vigrin butts wobbling on it......

Image

not only did i realize that as amazing as every part of that TWENTY FIVE THOUSAND DOLLAR BASS was, and the craftmanship was INSANE..... i actually like my Dingwall better. maybe i'm just all Fanned Fret For Life.

but i thought i'd never even SEE a CT bass. getting to play one (gingerly, with instruction "NO SLAPARU!!") is sooooooo cool. transcendant even.

anybody else get to play/use something they lusted after forever? how'd it go?

Walked into the local music store on Monday for the first time in years to a 60's Jazzmaster sitting on the counter next to the register. Haven't mustered up the balls to ask to play it, but I DO need a new pack of strings.....

I'll have some sort of response to this in 2 days. I've fantasized about owning a Ric 4001 or 4003 for about 20 years now, and always thought that they were forever beyond my price range. Well my Ric is on it's way to me now.

Yeah, I'd really like to play a tune on it, but I'd be scared as balls like you were to actually hold something of such great value in my clammy, cold hands hahah. I'll definitely ask next time though. They've got a 70's orange head there as well, that combo man...

Those rainbow basses look awesome. Some of the body shapes remind me of Wishbass stuff. Neato

almost every super expensive piece of dream gear i've ever gotten my hands on.....i liked what i had, or what could be had for much cheaper MUCH BETTER.

not that they weren't awesome or whatevz...i dunno. just didnt feel right, and ended up selling it (if i owned it)

some big ones that come to my mind are:
elektron machinedrum (was a beastttttttttttt tho, didnt use it enough to justify the price tag)
dave smith mono evolver (same as above...toooo many knobs to turn. got lost way to easy)

those were my two big gifts to myself when i got my first job after college.

but i did learn alot from it. (like i dont need 10 envelopes and LFO's and 432423 oscillators, just a nice simple yet somewhat feature rich device that can do a little more, but doesn't have to do EVERYTHANG)
nowadays. i tend to gravitate more toward gear that has a more simplistic nature/functionality

EASY SQUEEZY LEMON PEEZY

Shermano. DOOD. Y U NYC ME??!?

those two are the pieces of electro kit that i SCRAPED for as a kid. even got BURNED for a $g on the first time i thought i bought an Machine Drum (i had a SidStation at the time), learned that there are rules to follow to protect yourself on online purchases for a REASON, but kinda made my first MD $2,300.

i loved the MD, Sid and Mono so damn much, but yeah...... i never used them to their fullest. glad that MD's with Danno. he's much more of a tweaker than me.

STOP BEING ME SHERMZ.

I played a 1930s Herman Hauser I in a store in Ochanomizu.
Fuck. Spoiled for life -- but that thing cost as much as my house.
They were dead casual about handing it to me too. I'd have had armed guards on standby...

That's mine. A 1972 OR120.
Saw it in my local shop.
Saw the price.
Worked up the nerve to plug into it.
Came everywhere.
Started saving.
Saw the price drop.
Kept saving.
Saw the price keep dropping.

Purchased.

I've always wanted a way old resonator acoustic with a round neck. Just to have and play and make up cool stories about.

RAINBOWZZ

Closest I've gotten is locally owned The Low End bass shop. They have like fuckin' every desirable bass in there EVAR. Got to play a '67 or some odd jazz bass (out of the 4 or more that are there), CT's, Foderas, Benavente, Elrick, Sadowsky (and SOOO many more) and not to mention the super-crazy-high end amps and cabs they have everywhere with cables just laying around. Pick 'em up and PLAY. So cool! It's not like GC or other shops where you have to ask for a goddamn cable to play a $400 bass or guitar while they breathe down your neck. Cables on the floor, "Oh HAI $10k Fodera, I pway smokes on teh waterz on joo nao???"
