Finally got my shit sorted out, built a couple of buffers that worked, GGG Bosstone (awesome fuzz) and I'm about to dust off my Bazz fuss and debug it. In other words, my DIYing is on the go! I plan to spend the autumn building fuzz... just fuzz. What transistors do you guys consider "you need these on your bench"?

I ask because I'd prefer to buy a few different types and get a larger quantity and be able to build on a whim then to plan which projects I want to do and buy things one at a time

2N4401, 2N3904, 2N2222, MPSA's, BC107/8, AC128 germs. All common in fuzzes!

I'd pick up some 2n5088s and 2n5089s. Use those a lot in muffs.
