Hey all, I just bought a twin reverb 1979 with master. Took it to an amp tech this morning switched out all the tubes (pre amp and power tubes). Got it home, sounded great clean and loud.

Fast forward a few hours, I'm playing and my cable gets yanked out of my guitar while its turned up to about 1-2 and it makes the POP sound i plug it back in and suddenly I've lost almost all my volume and my tone is 100% distorted.

Any idea what this could be? I'm hoping it's not the output transformer. Could unplugging the guitar while not on standby destroy it?

Did you check to make sure all the tubes were firmly pushed into their sockets??? Unplugging the guitar shouldn't hurt it but I'd call that guy in the morning and tell him what happened... Maybe your amp rocked forward and back when it was yanked and something could have come loose...

Yeah I checked all the tubes, they seem fine, all plugged in.

I called him and he's out of town until saturday and isn't sure what it is. Says it could be quite a few things :/

Unplugging the guitar has no ill effect on the amp.

Now, when it came unplugged did it also pull on the amp or input jack?

First...CHECK THE CABLE. You might have just yanked too hard and the solder joints in the cable came loose. Try a new cable, let us know.

I concur...Ya gots check the cable first....

But I heard that ripping a cable out can damage the speaker coil....but it has never happened to me so...?

Either way it is a bad habit to yank on cables unless the unit is on standby....

no comment on what could be wrong, but this post makes me want a coily cable

i have no clue on the subject, but how can the pop or the cable getting ripped out affect the amp or speaker? doesn't make sense to me y itd affect it

Weird. So last night while playing I attempted several different cables, turned the amp off and back on multiple times and it still had the same problem. Low volume and incredibly broken up tone. So I called a local tech, took it by, when he went to test it it sounded 100% normal. So now I have it back and working but I'm confused and concerned that theirs some faulty issue at hand that's going to come up at the worst time, ha ha.

Caps going out??? Did you unplug it last night or was the first time you unplugged it and plugged it back in when you took it to get checked out??? Maybe a faulty input jack, did he look it over or just plug it in play it and give it back, are you using a good power strip or a surge protector???

could it be your input jack on your guitar?

The second tech, whom I took it to yesterday just plugged in and played said he'd charge 50/hr to open it up. I think that was the first time I had unplugged it. I'm certain it's not my guitar, I thought it was for a minute but I switched amps and it doesn't cut there. I tried multiple cables last night. It sounds clean and loud now but randomly it will either cut out for a split second or cut then drop in volume for a second then return to normal. It's very frustrating, ha ha.

Any ideas?

Also at one point after it cut it got all gainy again but then went back to normal.

I would have a tech look at it.

You eliminated the cable and guitar, it sounds like something is going on. Could be anything...caps, tubes, sockets, etc.
