I'm thinking tokais? I really dig the burst one.

Don't think either are tokai.
Left looks like a teisco and the middle looks like a silvertone.

I may be wrong, but the burst in the middle looks like a Teisco and the one on the left might be a Kawai.

Not Tokais. Those are $20 Japanese junk shop guitars.
The pickups in the middle one might be pretty good though...

Pretty sure the middle one is a Teisco.
The left one is likely a Teisco as well.
They probably play a bit patchy but sound awesome.

Myyyy baddd I meant Teisco, and said Tokai

The left one "feels" like a Kawai to me.

I wish they're $20, I'd own like 1,000 of 'em or something.

Get em both to harvest the gold-foils out of em and make yourself a nice Cooder-caster. (Go see Fast Eddie in Ypsi and snag that MIM Strat I was telling you about. Perfect Cooder-caster platform.)

When I lived in Kyoto, you would literally see piles of these in the junk shops and at the markets for 2000-5000 yen. ($20-$50)

I've got a lead on a Teisco with the proper gold foils ... wondering if I should snag it

Of course you should snag it.

And of course those guitars are cheaper in Japan, but the question is how long ago did you live in Kyoto, dev?

It was a decade or so ago -- I had 6 Tokai Strats at one point too and a couple of JV Squiers. The most expensive was about $150 because everybody wanted those heavy 70s US Fenders. Sold all the Tokais in the UK a few years ago for some serious £££ :yay: Still wish I'd kept at least one...
Those Teisco/Kawai/Kent guitars really are pretty poorly made though. I wouldn't pay a lot for one, but the pickups can be cool.

EDIT: I just bought this ugly monstrosity. Will probably rip out the pickups and recycle the rest on CL.

Yeah, the necks on the two that I've had have been awful! Fun little twangers though. And I love the brushed aluminum pickguards on some of them.

Agree for the most part, there're a scant few exceptions though.

My main guitar which I love to death is a Kawai, I dunno, it could be that I got a good one.
But mine sounds awesome and holds tune perfectly despite heavy bending and heavy bigsby (I put that on) use.
The pots have started to get real crackly though and the neck is a bit narrow.
Some of those 70s Jap guitars are beasts. I'd snap these up if you can?
