I've been GASsing for a semi-hollow bass for awhile now and messing around with my friend's old Gibson pretty much sealed the deal. I love my P-bass and everything but there's something about a semi-hollow bass that just totally gets me going. Now, I can't afford a beautiful old Gibson bass but if there's any semi-hollow basses that slay within the 500 dollar range, you have my attention. Thanks for your time!

OH and something that can bring on the heavy preferably.

I've been wanting a Viking bass ever since Hagstrom reissued them. Here is a rundown on the pickup configurations using the 6-way rotary switch:

1 - Neck + Bridge, Single coil (Outer coils)

2 - Bridge, Single Coil (Outer Coil)

3 - Neck, Single Coil (Outer Coil)

4 - Neck + Bridge, Humbucking

5 - Bridge, Humbucking

6 - Neck, Humbucking

These are running at about $750 or Best offer on Ebay, but you can find used or blems in the $500 range.

So, I'd tell you to look for something Japanese from the Sixties or Seventies.

That Greco doesn't look too bad.

If you want the murk, find an Epi Rivoli reissue with neck mudbucker. A bit more clarity to be found in the Epi Rumblekat Allen Woody sig and in various Hofner basses and copies thereof.

This is what I have. Thing is the stock mudbucker is not a mudbucker it is a suckbucker, you HAVE to replace the pickup on those things! There is one guy that builds the real deal out there at the right Ωedge [30K] but they cost the same as getting a vintage one.. which is what I have in mine. Or.. you could put a DiMarzio model one in it, the are great pickups but they are not a mudbucker at all, they have highs and growl.. and come with a 5 conductor cable so you can do a bunch of cool wiring stuff.

Also.. the thing you have to be careful with is if you get a old SS or a beatlebass or any reissue for that matter you are going to have a REALLY skiny neck so if you are use to P bass neck the Epi or the Ibanez would work out better as they play like a "normal" bass.

I should gotten my wife a Hofner Icon, then. She's been fighting the Rumblekat a bit.

Those Dimarzio Model Ones are great. I've got one in Moe Desu (thanks for naming my bass Mudbuddy) and it sounds huge!

I say if money's no object then find a guild starfire bass.
If money is an object (I think that makes sense haha) then the early 2000s Dearmond starfire bass is pretty sweet!
I have always had an affinity for Guild stuff.
