Ok, so we're not done yet, but my buddy Huey and I are building a steampunk guitar out of an old Squat (this should me what we call Squier Strats.). I'll link to the blog we have going just to document our progress, but here are a couple teaser photos.

We're about halfway into it, and plan on doing a pedal and an amp too. Thanks for checking it out.

Oh, and here's the blog which goes into more details if it please ya.

Etched copper guard?

My Fernandes LE_ strat clone has the same pickup rout. Kind of weird that they didn't just make it one big, long swimming pool rout.

(I want to find a magic junk-drawer-pickup combo to fill up the pool -- big, weird, old funky stuff.)

On the guard, yeah, electrolytic etching. We did it on the backplate and neckplate too. Click through to the blog to see 'em.

And yeah, you'd think it'd be easier on the maker to do it all as one big cavity. The date stamp on the guitar where the neck mets the body said 1990 if I remember correctly.

I had been interested in an anodized aluminum guard, maybe with gold reissue Filtertrons, until I learned that the anodization is essentially undone when you cut any more out of the guard. The copper, hmm. Even if it oxidizes a bit, that might work for me.

(What I had started to look into was the better simulation tortoiseshell 'guard material, which would just get to a wicked awesome cheese-log Cooder-caster place, but alas, no one was selling the material in strat 'guard sizes.)

Edit stuff for googled info: found cheap but good n funky tort of old. http://www.eyguitarmusic.com/NEW-Yellow ... p_518.html I'd prefer more stripe-y looking stuff, but way cheesy.

We were lucky to have access to a machinist who did all the dirty work of cutting it for us. And yeah, it'll patina and shiz, but that's what makes it awesome.

Looks great! Can't wait to see the finished product!

BTW I played a show with you guys in the beginning of March @ Black Cat.... I play bass / guitar in Drop Electric.... It's weird how many DC people are all of a sudden popping up on forums lately.....
