Wah similar to Maestro Boomerang?

Post by goroth »

Okay, this is a TGP question but whatever, ILF dudes to the rescue: my old man is after many years dusting off his guitar and wants to get a sound like Tony Joe White. Apparently the only effect Tony used is an old Maestro Boomerang wah. Not being a wah afficionado myself, will anything get Dad in the ballpark, or is there someone making a wah that is based on the Boomerang? :idk:

He makes a straight up version without all the crazy tuning knobs as well.

Hunt around for a Maestro BG-2 -- you'll get one on ebay for $100 if you're lucky. I haz 2 of em :)
The Boomerang is utterly awesome.

If it's a way sound, I'm pretty sure Wilson has found a way to replicate it

TGP? FTW!!!

:ilfreak:

Who doesn't wanna sound like Tony Joe White?

Your old man's OK by me.

I'd say just buy a vintage Boomerang, but if that's not an option, I used to have a Teese RMC3 that could cop a passable Boomerang. That might do the trick. I'd try out as many wahs as possible though. He may end up liking some other brand of wah.

I strongly suggest that you email Kevin Wilson because he really does make the best vintage clone wahs. I'm sure he can point you to which one of his wahs comes closest to the Boomerang, and probably even give you suggested settings as well. I'm not personally familiar with that wah, but I can speak to how fantastic his recreations are. I GAS'd for a Tycobrahe Parapedal for several years, and almost ended up plopping down $300+ on the reissue from Chicago Iron, before someone thankfully turned me on to Wilson Wahs. I got one of his Freaker Wahs, and it honestly NAILS the Parapedal perfectly.

BigChief speaks the truth. If it's wah, it's gotta be Wilson.

Damn, that's a good line if I do say so myself!

OK, Wilson fan boys, IIRC the throw on the Boomerang is a little bit longer than on Cry Baby style wahs.

How does the throw on the Wilson wahs compare?

I just found out Skip Pitts died today.

Are you talking about the physical sweep of the treadle, or the frequency sweep of the wah sound? Because the Freaker wah (Parapedal clone) has a fucking retardly huge frequency sweep (like so low that it goes below the low B on my bass), but the actual physical travel of the treadle is no different than most other wahs I've played. Certainly not the ridiculous angle of like an old chrome Morley or anything.

Amount of physical travel is what I'm talking about. I've got a lead foot. I like a lot of travel.

Ah, I gotcha. No, the Wilson's have the same physical travel as most other wahs. The only wah I ever tried with an extra big travel to it is one of the huge fucking chrome Morley PWB's. That thing's sweep was so fucking huge, that it gave me shin splints.

Thanks BCBC. I don't really like the action on the Morleys.

I'd like to get a Boomerang or maybe a Colorsound. I wouldn't mind trying out a Wilson, but I think it'd bottom out on me.
