I was trying to explain an idea to the drummer in my band - the riff is kinda clean and boring but I want some massive drums to go with it. Got nowhere. Anyone got any examples of songs that feature a quietish/clean guitar riff over some banging drums?

Something like this, but maybe perhaps a little bit more bombastic?:

Not exactly "clean" or "quiet", but definitely an example of a boring riff made awesome by massive drums.

This was the first song I thought of. Until the heavier guitars kick in, it's exactly what you describe.

Smile, that stuff is so far out of my musical frame of reference! Listened a couple of times now and can't decide if I hate it, or if I dig it or what. Woah. Sounds like you might need to listen to Harvey Milk? Though the guitars in this track aren't exactly quiet, they're quiet by Harvey Milk standards.
