Bass Cab/Speakers Advice needed!

So, my band's got a 1978 Fender Bassman 135 with the matching "pyramid-design" 4x12 cab which we are currently running our bass through and (imo) sounds fucking awesome in an old-school super-low-end kinda way. We use 2 guitars w/ single coils through trebly Fender amps live, so we don't want our bass to sound too punchy, but instead to fill out the shoegazy treble toanz we're producing for a very full sound.
We're looking for a somewhat affordable smaller cab (2x12 maybe? $200-400ish) that'll be compatible with our 4ohm amp head and won't sound like butts. We've tried the Ampeg Portaflex (2x10) and a few other cabs but we've found most of the stuff we tried were small cabs that tried to sound punchy, huge, and nice by themselves, but def not appropriate for the live mix we want. We don't mind having a custom cab built, but many of the people we have contacted are surprisingly inept when it comes to recommending good bass speakers for what we want.
Naturally, I come to you, the bass Gods of ILF in hopes that you might be able to point us in the right direction... So, what do you think?
