Phattening Things

I also posted this on Diystompboxes, but I figured I'd try and tap the wealth of knowledge we have going on here as well.

So, for various reasons, I have access to only one guitar for quite some time (a few years.) Fortunately, I get to enjoy my very nice teisco. It's a single coil guitar, and really is the best feeling guitar I own. I love it. Modding it is out of the question, it's about 40 years old and I'm doing my best to keep it stock.

Now. I play some fairly heavy music, with lots of fuzz (blues-y, garage-y rock, stoner rock, that sort of thing.) Sometimes singles don't give me that 'oomph' that I need to really push a few of my pedals. So, on to boosters! I played a Fat Boost and wasn't particularly impressed. The Ibanez BB-9 is almost exactly what I'm looking for - big bottom end, nice push to what's after it, and not too much break up. However, I always prefer to build rather than buy.

So, what pedals/circuits/etc do you guys recommend that'll give that little bit of humbucker-esque 'oomph' to my single coils, help me push my fuzzes?
Thanks.

what about just using an equalizer? i dont know if this will do what you want but maybe worth looking into. more control over what bands are really boosted than probably just a plain 'boost' pedal. might help you get the color you want

This page has a very in depth article on making a graphic eq, he keeps mentioning slider pots in teh article but of course normal pots will work just as well.

might be a bit much so to simplify things if you want try

or something in between. ?

I built a 6 band eq based on the first article and it was pretty ok. no experience with the second but if you put a simple boost in series with it it looks like you would have a lot of possibilities and pretty simple to build.

the BYOC FA-1 clone is very nice, you can dial in as much bass as you want! Also the Little Green Wonder has the capabilities of really phattening and saturating up some single coils, almost my first choice for second gain stage when I use my tele with vintage wound pups

The difference between humbuckers and single coils is literally just that they're louder and roll off more high end. So, if you use a bass boost or something, you should be fine.

I posted the schematic to the And Aardvarks! here:

The tone control just rolls off high end, like a guitar tone control. You can add it to anything, like a LPB-1 or something.

Devi Ever makes the Dark Boost, and I think she posted the schematic for it...

And then, there's the Hog's Foot. Which is basically an LPB-1 with a capacitor.

I couldn't find a schematic for the Ibanez BB9. : /
