Silvertone 1482... any opinions?

Post by tchen »

There's one on CL for $150! I'm super curious... my band put vocals through one recently on some recordings, but I didnt really spend much time with it. Hear it sounds pretty cool with guitar.

I've never played with a 1482, but I've owned 2 xl10's, and currently own one of the amps in a case. I love me a good Silvertone. Even had one of those 100wt. Solid State heads once upon a time. That thing could get crunchy as hell. Sounds like a sweet deal. If it looks clean and is in good working order, you should probably bite.

If it works 150 is a great price.
I have 2 1482's at the moment and they are killer sounding amps.
Most of the old Silvertone tube amps sound good but like all old amps you may have to throw a few dollars at it.
It may need recapping and new speakers never hurt.
Hey Blooghost, I never tried the xl10 but I got a little xl5 that rips, Sears sold some cool shit back then.
I still throw in your CD when I am soldering, it is quite a lofi gem.

Glad it serves the soldering well, man! That's the kind of thing I like for people to do when listening to my jank. Fuzz begets fuzz.
Xl5, eh? I'll have to do a search, as I'm unfamiliar with it. But I totally agree, the old Silvertones are great amps.

The XL5 is probably 3 watts and run the 50C5, 35W4, and 12AU6 tube layout.
I think they are what some people call "death amps" cause of the lack of power transformer.
If you add up all the tube voltages it is close to 100v so i guess this was an inexpensive design.
It is suggested to add an isolation transformer for safety reasons but I just try to be careful, i.e. no bare feet or licking microphones.
These and similar amps are super fun, can sound great, and can still be had for cheap if you look around a bit.

Got an old Harmony with that layout, run it through a 15, big crunchy bass at low volumes.
Great for recording.

I think those're good, but not outstanding amps. It's definitely worth $150 to find out though.

(A lot of people poo poo the sound of power tubes like the 50C5, but I like 'em.)
