Single Coil guitar, middle pup out of phase (set it on a switch for versatility, IMO). I think you could also drop the pickups so that they don't sound really clear when you're playing, to get a bit more of an acoustic-y sound.

This.
Also, if you have a guitar with a large bridge plate, a contact mic on there will get you some good trashy toans.

Gold foil pickups help.

an amplifier with the smallest speaker you can use without it totally fracking out...an 8" or even smaller would be ideal, or one of those trashy old oval car-radio speakers. quite possibly a small solid-state amp turned up loud enough to get that trashy distortion. tone turned down on the amp, too, to deaden the sound on the rhythm guitar. (edit:) the more i listen to this, the more it sounds like a humbucker guitar with the treble turned up on the amp. lowering the pickups sounds about right, too. and perhaps a relatively light nylon pick to de-emphasize the attack and get that odd whacka-whacka attack on the rhythm.

Don't overlook the attack, because how you play the guitar has a lot to do with how "trashy" it ends up sounding when it's amplified--see Marc Bolan of T Rex for a great example.

Yeah, I stopped playing with a pick some time ago and I do believe that is holding me back somewhat from sweet sweet toanz.
Thanks for all the ideas, people.

Yeah, I get trashy tones like that with a small combo turned up pretty high, but the main thing is the pick attack.

that's why i think a light pick would help...the sound of both guitars doesn't have a lot of SNAP on the attack. quite the opposite, which suggests a light pick made of soft material to me. it sounds like he's hitting the rhythm guitar hard, but the pick is flopping when it hits the strings so the chords go BOINGCLATTER.
