What do you do when...

your friend introduces you to their friend's music and its boring as fuck, but they really dig it?
its a conundrum because my friend sent me this stuff thats just like... REALLY boring and hipster trendy (aka james blake warmed over, like half of the pitchfork darlings these days) and its like... if i REALLY dont like something or like something i say so. i give digs at hist taste all the time because its hilariously consistent (blues-rock played post-punk straight + reverb and tremolo) so he's used to it. but its weird cuz he knows the guy personally.
what do?

I would say be honest but not harsh.
They might take offense or something but you can't be responsible for their reaction.

over the years i've learned to use the "it's a good example of that kind of thing, but i don't really care for that kind of thing" response to spare people's egos. i try to find something to like so i can say something at least mildly positive, but if i can't i'll be honest about some aspect that bugs me. for example, i can't stand the sound all the Texas-style Americana guys use because it's so overdone...you know, the maple-board Tele->OD->maybe a little chorus->trem->tweed Deluxe Reverb thing? fucking SHOOT ME. so if i hear that i'm going to say "you know, i've heard that too many times." but if it's really bad i'm just going to say "no, i'm sorry."

I usually give 'em a good ol', "It's not really my thing."
Dismiss with indifference.

That's my favourite response for these situations. Don't see any reason to be mean to people, but I'm not going to lie and say I like it.

It's even worse when its your friends.
I have one friend who does acoustic-folky stuff. I have another friend who does Ben Folds/Gilbert + Sullivan style piano pop.
Since you don't want to burn bridges, the "it's not really my jam, but it's done well" is a great one to turn to.

i usually just say "it's not my thing," even when it's friends.
i do go to shows though and support... but i tend to put a price limit on how much i'll go and support something i don't really like...

since you know the guy and you twit him about his tastes, why not just say "you know me, i hate this shit" with a bit of a rueful grin? make it so it's not about him, but about the fact that your taste differs. that's the key...make it so it's not about him.

i still haven't figured out how to say that stuff is boring to me because it's too conventional/not weird enough without sounding like i'm putting myself above "normalness." i can't help it that i'm all ADD and shit, and that my brain starts skipping ahead if i listen to Train or something.

normal and weird is a relative concept, doe.
if you shun normalness, relatively speaking, you're shunning weirdness

Regardless I think we can all agree that Train sucks.

I try to be encouraging. Even if I don't like something that doesn't make it bad...
