Catalinbread Montavillian or BOSS RE20?

Birfday is coming up soon, been looking at delays since selling my DMM. Looking more for the sound of old school tube or tape echo. Since I don't want to shell out the money for a Fulltone TTE or Roland RE-201, been looking at these two. Anyone done a comparison between the two?

The boss delays are always a good bet. Reasonably priced and you can get tons o toanz that work well with most amps.

if you're looking for a one (really good) trick pony. then the Monti or something like a 616 will be up your alley.

boss delays are always a great bet... like it was said earlier, they offer tons of sounds for a great price...

HOWEVER,

the montavillian does ONE thing REALLY FUCKING WELL :)

the montavillan sounds absolutely nothing like a tape echo. Tape Echoes are generally pretty clean sounding at peak performance. The Montavillan is one dirty bird. The repeats degrade amazingly, its hard to describe but they like degrade and swirl at the same time. It's a very cool delay. Very Very cool. It's like modulated sounding but not in a HEY I'm a super clean delay with "chorus" added breau.

So if your looking for a tape echo, look elsewhere. but its is a fine delay. I have an El Capistan for tape echo stuff. I use that for situations where I want the delayed notes to remain clear-ish for like rhythmic delays, and the montavillan I'd have on all the time for some delish ambiance.

This though swap out El Cap for a M9 and the Monty for a 616 in my rig.

I like my RE20. Awesome set of features - eq for repeats, tap tempo, reverb, expression input. And great sound, I prefer RE20 over ElCap. Never tried Monti though, would be interesting.

Feel like I keep singing the praises, but if you want a pretty dark, beautiful and lush sounding echo, the Monty is hard to beat. The RE20 will give you way more features, but the for the size and sound, it's Monty all day for me.

So basically it's not really a tape/tube (digital) delay but more like an analog-voiced modulated digital delay?
