So, I was in the car today, and my favorite classic rock station (97.9 for the chicagoans) puts on Pink Floyd- Comfortably Numb.

Now, I own the 2011 remaster of Comfortably Numb. But there's something special about hearing it on the radio. Am i crazy?

The state of radio today enrages me, but to save us all from a long, long rant, I'll just say radio DJs/station managers/programming directors are the laziest, most obnoxious people, who take no pride in their work.

Something kinda funny that's related, whenever I'm talking about this with people IRL I always mention how I hate radio personalities especially those morning show one's. People always respond, "Oh yeah that's so true, except I do like *insert exactly one of the people I'm talking about*." It's so obvious that they're trying to agree to sound smart or something when they really don't feel that way at all (I can admittedly be a highly opinionated douchebag on certain, very specific things like this).

Radio as a format and an idea is awesome.

Back to topic, yes I love hearing things on the radio, even if I own it. For example, I am THRILLED whenever this comes on:

Radio in general is awful. Especially all the presenters, it's like they round up the most obnoxious and annoying people they can find on purpose. And on the rare occasions a good song comes on a music station, they always start talking halfway through for a while. If it's a music station/show, let people hear music, not your fucking voice.


There's some decent stuff out there, like Radio 4 in the UK has lots of good programs where they get intelligent people to discuss interesting subjects and it's cool, but it seems like 99% of radio is just inane chatter designed for background noise.

F'real, and from what I've heard, it used to be pretty damn awesome, back when they actually cared about the music.

And true that, monkeydancer. The talking pisses me off to no end. It seems to me like it's always the intro of songs. It's like "Meh, people don't want to actually hear anything apart from the vocals so I'm just going to stretch out my idiotic ramblings right up to the point where the vox come in."

One time that happened over Guerrilla Radio. Oh the irony.

I do enjoy hearing music I like on the radio though since I drive a good amount and get tired of the few cds I have left after I put them all on my computer, but I get sick of our oldies station (my 4th/5th string station) which is literally on a 3 hour rotation. One time, when I worked nights at a gas station, it actually stopped for a minute or two and played the same song (Nights on Broadway, I think, which I actually like ) twice in a row in it's entirety and it was so obvious that no one at the station was even there listening to their broadcast. It just astounds me that an entire industry can get away with absolutely no quality control whatsoever.

Thank God for public radio. It's not amazing, but it's a hell of a lot better than the rest. The only good commercial stations I've heard are The Current in the twin cities and 97.1 The Drive (classic rock) out of Chicago which I can actually pick up most of the time.

i like it when i hear my band on the radio.

i'm a very talk-radio kind of guy, though.

I started dj-ing at a college station (KXUA.uark.edu) during the Fall of 2004, and I stayed there until about a month ago. It was an amazing experience and I would put my station above most commercial stations and even a lot of other college stations. In the middle of college, I interned at a radio station conglomerate. I forget how many different channels they had, but it was basically neck and neck with Clear Channel. After seeing how they run things and how small a part music plays, I decided that I didn't want to pursue radio as a career. If you are interested in that, start crafting that character now. Your taste in music and general knowledge will be secondary to your image and the sound of your voice.

Whenever I go to new cities, I always search for the college stations and community stations. Some of the best programs I've ever heard on the radio were on community stations.

The college stations around here remind me of hipster circle-jerks

That's the real root of the problem, I'm highly interested in broadcasting and people tell me I have a great voice all the time. It's like being a radio/tv personality is my destiny.

Seriously, who ever thought you could fit the word "anesthetize" into a song so smoothly?

I really want to be on the radio and sound super mellow/NPR-like except say the filthiest most perverted and profane things all the time. Does anybody know about the unofficial "rules" for radio as to specifically what four letter words you can and can't say? Ignoring the fact that the FCC is entirely reactionary when it comes to standards and practices and only acts when something is particularly prominent and garners lots of complaints. They're anything but "standard."
