So incredible, etta. I remember becoming incredibly fascinated with her work when while working on my jazz and blues undergrad.

At the risk of sounding like an incensitive dick, I thought she died along time ago... Where did she disappear to?

At last is so iconic, she sound soo godamn smooth...just amazing

Peace and trees Etta.

You don't really sound insensitive. I think it's all too common for people who've accomplished things in the past to drop outta sight and become all but forgotten. It's kind of sad that they're often not remembered until they die.

Etta James was around some. She still sang occasionally. She also went after Beyonce a few years ago for singing "at last" for the Obamas. Apparently, Beyonce did not meet Ms. James' expectations. Names were called.

Etta over Beyonce any day...beyonce end up pushing too hard and sound forced and harsh....Etta is effortless and smooth.

I think both have incredible talent. I think it was a bit (way) bitchy for Ms. James to come down so hard on someone who had only ever said nice things about her.

Etta James and Aretha have had a hard time passing the torch onto the current batch of divas. Not that anyone has anything on Aretha...

Maybe not, but there are/were plenty of other talented singers (contemporaries of Aretha & Etta or otherwise) who never got half the chance.

I'm a big fan of these women:

I suspect it has alot to do with how hard the earlier R&B singers had to fight to get recognized and respect from the industry. At the time they were recording it was most difficult to get respect i society as: (a) a woman and (b) a African American, I think this should be recognized. Fighting tooth and nail with the likes of Phil Spector and his contemporaries will make you hang on to things... and frankly they paved the way for these newer artists, they earned their diva status...by comparison beyonce is a spoiled brat.

I would even go so far as to say that the earlier R&B singers had to be aggressive and controlling to assert themselves and command respect in order to make a living in a repressive social environment, but the newest batch of divas are simply pop singers who want specific foods in their lavish dressing rooms are tantrum prone petulant children. IMHO of course.
