Which Ampeg amps for guitar?

I've been in the market for a more powerful tube amp, and I've seen lots of recommendations for used Ampegs (LOUD and not extremely pricey), but does anyone have suggestions as to which one(s) will sound best for guitar? Is should be noted that I play two steps down, and while the bass response is important, I also want clarity when I need it. I came across the Ampeg V4, but any other ideas?

He said he wanted More power, small brian/BIG BRIAN

If you want more power, get an SVT.

I'd say V4, V2, VT22 or B25. You can also check out the V4b and B25b which are the bass versions which are the same amp w/o reverb.
You could get an SVT as D.o.S (always) suggest but they cost quite a bit more than the others.
Check out some old Sunn stuff too (200s, Sorado, 2000s).
The Ampegs and the Sunns are OK on their own but are really best suited if you get your dirt from pedals. Since this is ILF I'll assume you do. ;)

A lot of people use the old Traynors and Bassmans too. I don't have any personal experience with them but they might be worth looking into.

You know the best part? I've never owned/felt the need to own an SVT. :thumb:

Another nifty way to get around this would be to get something like a Flipster or one of the Tech 21 Character series pedals and an el Cheapo tube amp and run the pedal through the effects loop, which'd bypass the preamp*.

*Sometimes. Not all amps are set up this way.

Between the V4 and V22 I tried recently, I'm going with the V4. The combo is too fucking heavy and I have cabs I love already.

Super quick thread jack....What's the most you Ampeg guys would pay for a locally owned, super clean, well maintained late 70's V4 (master volume model)? I'm currently in negotiations with the original purchaser/owner and it's served as his backup all this time. Minimal hours relative to it's age, looks brand new, functions perfectly, sounds killer!

What do you pay???

I feel like I've seen you recommend an SVT quite a few times, and always assumed you owned one because of that. What is your amp situation, if you don't mind me asking?

Update doperigs :poke:

The SVT thing is mostly born out of the fact that I came over here from Talkbass, where the de facto answer to "what tube head should I buy" was always an SVT. I've played a handful of them, and they are awesome, but I just post it for shits and giggles mostly.

Right now on the amp front I've got a Sovtek MIG100, a Peavey Mark VI, and an Orange OR120.

Doperigs gets one more update, the often vaunted Helms/Torche/Big Biz show gear rundown. I've got it all typed up, I just haven't put it on the site yet. Lots of balls in the air, and all that.

Oh, and I'd probably go600 650ish (since it's local) for that V4. Depends on how bad you want it, though.

V4 is sounding like the one.... How does the sovtek compare? I was looking into those too.

Yeah, he's bustin' my ballz at $650 and it's hard to counter on the local + pristine V4 that's available to test out pre-purchase. Unfortunately, I want it pretty bad too...

If you want it and can afford it, it doesn't matter what we think you should pay.

Bro, no TGP, I gotta sell some shit to finance this thing and I'm looking to get Ampeg minus overpaying. Thus the gear inquiry on gear forum...
