found one for 275 with brand new groove tubes on cl, hardly used. i want a ballsy single channel amp with an fx loop that can push some air. already spoke to the guy about taking it off his hands, but what do you guys think? deal/no deal?

From what I've heard they are actually pretty good amps...but I wouldn't pay over $200 for one of the heads. Peavey has always made good tube amps for the money IMO.

I would say that's a pretty good deal if it's got new tubes in it. Like bronzetalon said, they're good for the money, built like tanks, and can take a beating. 100 watts is going to move some air too, especially with a clean boost at the end of your chain. It'll take a little bit of work to get it to sound dirty, being 100 watts, but soemtimes thats a good thing!

I played bass through one in a Daddy's Junky Music when they were closing, and I have to say that it sounded pretty beastly. I can tell you it dirtied up just fine when I cranked it up. Actually, I'd say that it didn't have as much clean as I was expecting for a 100 watt head, which may or may not be a good thing, depending on what you are looking for.

if clean headroom is an issue i can swap the preamp tubes out for something else. no biggie. i am going to be slamming the front end with a muff and a rat simultaneously quite a bit, though. a little bit of tube break up when the pedals are off won't be a bad thing.
and i think the price is reasonable since it was just re-tubed and biased.
what are some decent cabs/speakers that i could maybe even run a bass with too?

2 1x15's would be killer, modular, and sound massive

I've seen Windsor halfstacks go for that much. Then again, fresh decent tubes might be worth more than the Windsor 412 the way people talk about that cab.
Some people apparently like those amps as a mod platform, some of which sounds like it's about unlocking unused potential.

Ampeg Fridge!
Also, for my own curiosity, why the need for an FX loop?

i like clean reverb trails. but i just traded my hall of fame, so right now it ain't no big thing.
if i could mod the thing to have either kt88s or 6550s in the power section, that'd rock.

the older the better with Windsors. The tone is pretty badass, but be warned that it doesn't have much in the way of clean tones

that's okay. i don't play too clean that much these days anyhow. my m80 has a gorgeous clean tone, so i may just get a a/b/y selector and go to town...

found some sunn heads on cl for 600 obo. one is a 200s head and the other is a spectrum 1. is one louder than the other? how is the mid range response on the 200s without a mids knob?
the kt88s in the 200s excite me though, i have always wanted an amp with those installed.

I own a Sunn Sorado and I really like it. It's the exact same amp as the 200s but they originally came with different cabs so they gave them different names.
The 200s will definitely be louder and have more headroom than the Spectrum I and takes pedals really well. The Mids are basically flat but you can boost them with pedals.
They are great amps and really well built but I think $600 is a pretty high price. I'd play it first and if you really like it offer $400 and go as high as $500.
I bought mine on ebay a year ago for $400 and it came with a roadcase. It was listed "buy it now" after someone had won it for $360 and didn't pay.
Hell, I'd sell you mine shipped with the roadcase for $600 without a second thought.
Then, I'd take the $600 and buy a Ampeg V4 Here is some more info: (Amp descriptions start about 2/3 the way down the page)

so, this guy wanted 550 for it without the chassis or the the sunn badge on it...i tried to talk him down but he won't go for it.
now there's a v4 on CL for 600 with the original tubes. might be worth checking out.
I JUST WANT TO BE LOUD
