External mic with iPhone?

Yo I want to record some video demos once I upgrade my iPhone and I have a couple questions. Since the iPhone mic clips at pretty low volume I want to hook up an SM57 or something for better sound quality. Is there a cable that will let me hook a mic like an SM57 up directly to my iPhone? Would I NEED a mixer or something between the mic and iPhone?

Are there any dope free video/sound editing apps that I should check out?

Thanks

i have a blue mikey, first gen. the second gen is supposedly better. it's a decent condenser.

THAT. lol. that's what i was thinking of and was too lazy to look up. i've seen some video's that were shot of it that sounded decent.

i'm curious about it. it'd be neat to always have a good'ish mic with you.

it's ok, but you have to mind the input levels and clipping. also, it's quite sensitive and you can't really use it to record when you're holding the ipod or iphone--you have to set it down.

I use and love this attachment. Great for jams and demos that don't have to be pristine.

There are things on our Soundcloud and Vimeo recorded with it that I won;t post here for want of not spamming, but they're there if you want to hear them. (Any video or things marked 'Rehearsal Tape'.)

I think they're awesome for the exact reason Behndy stated. Great to have with you, and if you use the Multitrack app, indispensable.

I only post this because I don't really link my own solo stuff elsewhere, but I recorded this with the Blue Mikey and Multitrack.

iRig is another option.

this ones a 1/4" input adapter that I think is marketed as for guitar, but u can plug in mics, and line level shit too.

and they make a straight mic too, no idea how it sounds.

Which one are you talking about?

Also, I've heard the Mikey might not work with the 4/4S. Anyone know if that is true?

BEWARE the BLUE

It sounds amazing, but make sure it is compatable with your iphone/itouch. They newer ipods and iphones are only compatable with a new style of inputs, and they have not updates the BLUE mics yet. :thumb:

I mixed it in the app itself, and threw on some reverb (also in app), but nothing was done off the phone aside from fading it out. BECAUSE FADEOUTS ARE AWESOME. Do make sure it'll work though, should be easy enough to find out.
