Man, I am so bummed that I'm missing their RI show this weekend. Something like 20 guitarists, 2 drummers and a string section playing in a circle with the audience in the middle. I am digging their Soundcloud stuff HARD!

I love Dan's work. I had an awesome tshirt from him. Damned if I can remember where it is now, though.

This was a gear lovers paradise. And the music...it was transcendent. It was my first time at Machines With Magnets, what a fantastic space. Great people too.
Be a good sport, go see some shows or record there!

Aw dang - you were at MWM? I wanted to go, but had to miss it due to prior plans. It's a great space, great recording facility, and great people. My old band recorded at one of their previous locations, and my last band got to play an art opening at the current location. Amazing to see a group of talented people develop & grow like they have.

Do you know John Kolodij and Emily Arkin? I think they were in the ensemble for both performances.

That's the dude that plays as High aura'd, right?

I saw him play once. ONCE.

So much awesome gear, so much boring music. Maybe I caught him on an off night, but IDK? :idk:

Ha ha ha. Yep, John is High Aura'd. He has some amazing gear, but his solo stuff is definitely all about the drooooooooooooooooooone. I read an interview in which he said that he was actively resisting his "rock" tendencies, which in my opinion is a bit of a shame, since back when he was playing in bands in Providence, his rock playing was pretty damned awesome. He was the first guy that I saw intentionally drive a delay to oscillation, and use it for soundscapes. And that was him playing bass! But hey - if he digs it, he digs it.

Oh, I'm all about the drone. I'm down with the drooooooooooooooooooone, but if you're gonna drooooooooooooooooooone at least make it sorta interesting. Drones in and of themselves aren't necessarily musical, it's what you do with them that sets you apart from all the other wannabe minimalist composers. Especially with somewhere like $30,000 worth of gear at your disposal. I mean, c'mon? You give me that many musical tools to use and I'll take you somewhere you won't soon forget. Otherwise you can just make a didgeridoo out of some PVC pipe or something and call it a day.
