So, I am tired of using the loops in garageband in my lo-fi recordings/demos. At best they are slightly less boring metronomes...

So, people. What do you use to make beats? Real-life, honest to god drum machines or software? Does anyone know of any free software I could do this with?

We program all of our beats manually in Cubase, triggering an Alesis SR-16. We just loop a 2 or 4-bar phrase and move the beats around until it sounds good. And then I'll occasionally run those through some pedals if I need them crunchy or with effects on them.

Drum machines dawg; you can get one from the 80's that sounds good for less than 150 bones that will probably live longer than you will, you can run them through pedals for nifty sounds, you can play your own fills if you aren't doing any thing during a certain point in a song, drum machines can be circuit bent, and you don't have to worry about dragging your expensive mac around.

I love the Electribe! It's at my friend's house right now and I miss it...

Sound perfectly reasonable; I don't know much about the RX-5 but, assuming it functions and sounds much like the RX-8, it's totally worth it. The sliders actually seem like they would be an improvement.

So I just bought a used Korg ER-1 on ebay. Looks badass and seems to do everything I'd want to. The only problem is for some reason paypal has both my old and new address on there. I accidentally paid without realizing that it will be shipped to my old address. Fuck me man. I sent the seller an e-mail, but am not sure if he'll believe me or think I hijacked a paypal account. Not sure what to do or how to prove it. Sucks.

If you've got an iPad, there's an Electribe ap. Between Korg and Moog I'm not gonna have a choice but to get one of those.

If you don't want a physical drum machine, try and find a copy of Addictive Drums. They're on par with the drums from hell program. Super organic sounding, and you can mix virtual mics, change the room size....all that good stuff.
