G-string dificulties

I have this problem where my G string never stays in tune. Every guitar I've ever owned (save for my 80s kramer with a floyd locking nut) never wants to keep the g string in tune. I've tried everything I can think of; lubing the nut slot, widening the not slot (this thread is going downhill already  ), replacing the whole nut adjusting the intonation, taking the string trees off my strats, replacing the string trees, upgrading the tuners. I've read that certain vintage guitars have g-string tuning issues, but even my 4 year old eclipse has this issue. It seems to be worse on 3 on a side headstocks, but it happens on them all. I've considered trying a wound 3rd string but I'm not sure if it would help or make the problem worse. Maybe it's the way I play? Does anyone else have this problem? is it more common than I think, or am I some kind of weirdo? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What gauge strings do you use?

I know I have this problem with electric guitars but not acoustic.

I sorta think the unwound G-string is too tight and slippery.

i'm a bit baffled on this myself (being what all you've tried).

are you tuning up to pitch?

...must always tune up to pitch...if you go sharp, be sure to twist it back below pitch and tune up again.
big bends nut sauce is awesome, but you can make your own with vaseline and graphite power. use on the saddles and the nut. put it on before the string goes on so it's under the string.

It's always the g-string. I just think it's because it's the largest unwound string. Once they start to wear down it's the first to go.

Wound unwound if you are out of tune.. it's the G... speaking of which anyone know of a good source for 29 unwound? Nothing sounds like then.

Next set I order will definitely be wound G. That unwound G drives me insane switching between acoustic an electric.

oh yea........are you stretching the strings like a bitch when you put a new set on?
i break strings by stretching them so much.
you say with a locking nut they stay in tune, so that's prolly not it. but i'm just reaching for ideas on this. for some reason it concerns. :idk: but i can be obsessed with tuning.

it's weird that the problem follows you from guitar to guitar. of coarse, guitars go out of tune from time to time, but it shouldn't follow you around.

dude, unwound G's will snap your neck off. My buddy at GC is an expert at this shit, and he told me if I used heavier than 10s on my guitar, or guitars with a wound third, the neck would shoot clean off.

Don't risk it
