what exactly does it mean that a fuzz has a buffer. My MXR classic fuzz has an optional buffer. I notice a difference in sound, but what is actually going on in thar?

In pedals, they serve a couple of purposes. They separate circuits (to prevent feedback or interaction with controls), and they provide a high impedance input to match a guitar so it won't get loaded down (lose volume and high end), and give a low impedance output so they don't get loaded down like the guitar can.

In the MXR classic fuzz, it's to prevent oscillation that can happen if you put a wah before a fuzz face. I don't know why it oscillates, but that's what it's for.

Most of the boutique and vintage fuzzes don't use buffers and have pretty low input impedance. A lot of time the pedal was designed assuming that pickup loading, which is why buffers seem to ruin the tone of a lot of fuzzes.

OMG, I feel I am gonna have to find a spare couple of days straight to lock myself in my basement and reinvent the order of my pedalboard now.

You might....... The first bad buffer discovery I made was when i placed my fuzz factory after a visual sound JeckylandHyde: And it sounded like barf, some fuzzes are OK with buffers some ......barf

Currently I run my reaper first in the chain and then an MI audio boost and buff and then everytyhing else, works very clean and I run a bunch of stuff that is buffered and notoriously badly: Whammy/Expression Factory.

BUffers are why my chain cannot begin with a boss tuner...

No issues with my boss tuner first.

Man, now I'm all concerned about my chain order. Anyone know if the M13 is true bypass?

Right now, my setup looks like this:

Guitar > SS/BS Year 4545 > Effects Loop of M13 (OCD > Blackout Very Special Twosome > SS/BS Blargg > Geiger Counter > Whetstone) Effects Loop out > El Capistan > Amp

Am I messing anything up with the buffers there?

per the line 6 website it is true bypass but I am not sure if the effects loop is

Essentially the loop can't work correctly in true bypass mode from what I have read.

not all fuzz pedals have trouble with buffers so you may be fine, might just want to play with signal order a bit and see what happens.

I doubt your using much in the realm of oscillation or picky fuzz.
