Why can't I run a Nano Muff Overdrive off a power supply?

Post by nieh »

Just got my Nano muff and when I plug it into the power supply (Gator GBUS 8) It won't turn on.

I believe it is reverse polarity so it needs it's own isolated power supply.

Google "nano muff polarity" for more info.

EDIT: I thought since I was using a power supple (http://www.musiciansfriend.com/guitars/ ... wer-supply) It wouldn't need its own.

yeah... that's a thing with positive ground pedals... they behave kinda weird in a chain /in a normal (negative) ground environment... you could do a charge-pump mod or something to get around that issue or just run it off a battery.

if you have room in your current enclosure you could fiddle it into it additionally, otherwise you might have to rehouse it or just add a little (really little) additional enclosure for the charge pump:

tadaaaa... problem (maybe... probably) solved. :thumb:

Manual says it uses a negative power supply, so you can't daisy chain it. You'd have to use an isolated power supply.

... why in the hell would they do that?

The nano ones shouldn't be positive center...odd. Considering how low the draw is with those, I'd just use a battery in it to be safe. Would last forever.

Each power out would have to be isolated for that to be true. It appears as though they are not with the gator bus. It's essentially a onespot, with extra volt options.

Do you know where I could possibly find one of these "isolated power supplies"?
Ideally, it would have 5 outs and be in a super small enclosure. Bonus points for pink adapter cables.

I think it's down to it being one of the earlier pedals to be 'Nano-ed' and at the restart of EHX, they had a strict policy to try and keep everything like the originals that were loved. The change from big box to standard die-cast enclosures and from positive ground to negative ground was due to customers asking for it and the business evolving to meet modern needs.

The early EHX pedals had positive ground because BOSS, Ibanez etc. (who could be claimed to have started are love of 9V Negative Ground) hadn't been established in the market so much and made negative ground 2.1mm DC jacks a standard, hence the funny phono jacks the old pedals had, that kinda supply was probably more prevelant at the time and when EHX came back, they did as they'd always done.

So it got switched to 2.1mm but positive ground, probably a mistake looking back for them, but that's how it be.

Charge pump, messing with the insides, one of those special converter cables (which are really one of the two previous options but just done for you) or a battery.

A Battery will last years though, the current drain is around 3-5mA if I remember correctly.

Well, a single ended power supply would be isolated technically. Things like the pp2+ have isolated outs. DC brick, Gator, etc do not.
