I'm a Zildjian Fanboy... because they're FREAKIN' AWESOME!!! bought a-series 22" medium ride, 21" sweet ride (use it as a crash), 20" oriental crash of doom, 10" Splash (thanks to Caesar

) and currently saving up for an a-custom 20" EFX-crash.... They're just so durable and awesome sounding that I want to grow more hands just to hit them all at the same time

...
So yeah... whatever you do- don't buy Zildjian ZBTs.. they're shit.. also Meinl HCS's are pretty crappy (I had one myself).. and as far as Paiste goes- I had the PST-3, PST-5 and the Alpha set... PST-5 sounds good.. pst-3 sounds like old scrap metal... and the alphas were just not my taste...
however- if you have a local music store nearby- go and try them! don't bother mixing brands or sizes... just buy what you like.

some stuff on my radar:
Meinl Byzance Dark series Rides and Hats....the sky ride is especially calling out to me.
Zildjian Earth Ride and Breakbeat Ride.
Sabian Leopard Ride and Omni Rides.
Paiste 2002 series in general.
The idea of 15" hats.
I am finding the idea of crash cymbals completely uninteresting. I want to put together a set-up with a super heavy dry ride preferably 22", a somewhat lighter ride that can be crashed and 15" hats. Nothing else cymbal-wise.
Not much chance to try stuff at local stores. Looking to find hot deals used.

I play drums. I've tried lots of these cymbals you're talking about, and can say-
Zildjian Earth Ride is cool as shit and can be found on the cheap used. Dry with lots of stick. Cool ride if that's what ya dig.
A drummer I used to play with had one, and I enjoyed the hell out of it. Mixed great with the next thing I'm about to mention-
for a crash ride, the whole fucking world uses the Z Sweet Ride, but I'm a big fan of the Paiste Giant Beats - I have a whole set, and the 20" is especially good, imo. Giant Beats were the precursor to 2002, and are made of the same alloy. They're all thinnish and crash well. Think early John Bonham. A little darker than 2002s, but still plenty bright - the top end on 2002 can be a bit much.
15" hats - I have tried lots. I'm generally a Paiste fan, and have 15" Giant Beats and vintage 15" SE 2002s.
that said - Zildjian K Lights. Best 15" hats out, imo.
btw, you have the right idea. To me, in a loud rock band, a crash cymbal smaller than 18" is just going to sound like a tinny noise in the mix.
for rockin', big crashed are where it's AT. (I need 2 crashes, though.)
you have a drumset together? let's see pics! I'll post mine if you post yours!

I do NOT use my sweet ride as a crash ride... I use it as a CRASH!

yeah.. why do we have a "Let's see your Guitar", a "Let's see your Keys/synths" and bla bla bla thread but no drumset thread?
I demand one
Also- this sounds like 10 year olds fighting... "I want to see your new toy"- 'I will only show it to you if I can see yours first' - "No I want to see yours first" - and on and on and on

if you're on a tight budget, go to
http://www.mycymbal.com and check out the Sabian SR2 cymbals. Cool recycled bizz. You have to listen to the clips, though, because 2 cymbals can have the same description and sound TOTALLY different.

ha! I'll go first, I'm not scared! I haven't taken any drumset pics in a long while - these are from June of last year.

When I was playing drum a bunch, I had several killer, big $ snares too, but now I'm down to the matching snare of my kit,
and some cheap but stellar vintage snares - keystone Acrolite (still my favorite), Slingerland Krupa brass, an 80's Tama steel.

shit, I hope not. I would be accused of over-compensating! 26" kick, 24" ride....it's suspect.
I got a great deal on the Gretsch kit used, though.
I wish I could find someone with a kit of comparable quality with a 20" or 22" kick that would want to trade.

I am playing a temporary kit consisting of a pdp bass drum, a 5x14 ludwig supraphonic snare, dw 5000 series hardware and a set of cheap wuhan traditionals. I've got an old early 70's Ludwig Standard kit that I just got out of storage.....needs some reconditioning and I've been dragging my feet on that.....will post photos of both once I get to a computer.....posting from phone right now.

those Ludwig Standard are pretty good. the same shells as other desirable Ludwigs, just the lugs and other parts aren't quite as good.
they'll sound excellent when you get 'em reconditioned, as long as the shells are still round.
just sent you a pm, btw!
