Thanks for listening Devi! The first few times I heard Zappa I was like wft? Then the right song hit me and I've been in love since!

Zappa can't really be pegged as doing any certain style of anything! He has been exceptional at classical, jazz, blues, rock and even more! His career spanned from the mid 60's to the early 90's when he left this earth! He has recorded so much that his wife is able to continue to release his music and will be able to for many more decades!

I'm not twisting anyones arm here, but if you connect - you'll get to experience all of the humor and world class musicianship that he has to offer!

I remember watching some footage of Trent Reznor acting silly backstage getting ready for a show! All of these freaks walkin' around (Manson and friends) and their jammin' Zappa! I thought that was kinda cool! While NIN and LowWoods sound nothing like Zappa, Frank has the ability to inject inspiration anywhere!

Whenever Zappa played, Rock, Jazz, Fusion, Blues, Classical... well, it all became "Zappa" he had that much of a personality... Fuck, even when his BANDS played any of these genres and he was having a smoke by the side of the Stage they sounded "Zappa".

Devi, the records I always recommend for starting the wonderful, wonderful journey into Frank's Ouvre are Apostrophe (') and Overnite Sensation. They have EVERYTHING you could possibly want in music.

And if you and Kimberly are on a MUSICAL kick then you can't go wrong with the funkiest truest rock opera of all time: JOE'S GARAGE! :rock:

I've never really been able to get into his comedy stuff, but Hot Rats blew me off this planet, holy shit. And then I checked out Waka/Jawaka and the Grand Wazoo and a bunch of other stuff, but Hot Rats is my fav; some of the rawest jazz rock I've ever heard. The Gumbo Variations is just :love:

. The three soloists including Zappa last, just kill it.

I like the faster jazzy stuff. The stuff where it's not just shenanigans anymore. Mother of Invention stuff!

Long time fan here, LW. Thanks for spreading the word.

My big bro gave me a cassette of Joe's Garage Vol. 1 when I was in middle school, like '78 or '79. Flipped my pre-adolescent lid. In '84 I bought Jazz From Hell... (Devi, maybe try this one... it's mostly Frank and the Synclavier, with one really rippin' guitar solo). But it was in '96 that I got in really deep. I started collecting all FZ's live recordings-- You Can't Do that On Stage Anymore, Vols. 1-6, The Best Band You Never Heard In Your Life, Roxy and Elsewhere, et al. This is where the FZ catalog really starts to shine. This is where you start to figure out what Frank's 'Conceptual Continuity" is all about...this is where you get the most inspired performances from the amazing array of musicians in the band(s)...this is where you realize that underneath all the satire, smut and humor, FZ was one of the most sincere and true artists that ever lived.

I had (another!) epiphany early one morning in '97, listening to this very song. I was riding my bicycle to work at 4 am in downtown San Francisco (an opening shift at Stardork's). The city is practically deserted at that time. On my walkman that summer, it was all boredoms, Mose Allison and Zappa. That particular morning, the live version of Carolina Hardcore Ecstasy came on, and the story got me laughing. Then the solo came in, and it was so great, so sincere, so soaring...so fucking perfect, that I burst into tears, literally. Since that moment, I am utterly powerless with FZ, and every time i listen to his music it is a powerful and moving experience. I cannot listen to him "casually." It's intense, bitches!

At first, Zappa, like all the best tings in life, requires a fair bit of growth, tolerance and effort from the listener. For a long time, I couldn't "get" Zappa, but neither could I leave it alone...and I kept returning to the source to try to figure it all out. But the rewards for your effort are indescribable, unparalleled.

It's a long, beautiful ride. You'd best get started.
