Okay, so, my beloved JC-120 had some problems, local and long-running repair place determined it was the speakers, and swapped them out.

Turns out they put in Bugeras. I refuse to support anything made by Behringer, but I have practice tomorrow and this is my sole amp. So I took it.

My options are these:
- Pay to get original speakers (which I have) re-coned
-Get better new speakers

Please suggest good speakers that aren't outrageously expensive-- this is not my area of expertise at all and I'd really appreciate any help ILF can give me.

Well do you not like the sound? I wouldn't be so quick to judge just because the larger owner makes shitty shit. I don't know a lot about bugeras though.

It sounds alright, but I'm not blown away or anything. Would much, much rather make an investment towards longer-lasting, solid gear and sounds.

A good recone does wonders. Or some eminences.

Annnd I'm likely getting two UK-made Celestion 12"s for ~140ish from a dude in Arizona. Thoughts? Seems like a solid match.

What model of speakers and what wattage?

Celestion Vintage 30s. UK-made, not the new Chinese ones. 60 watts each.

I put an Eminence Tonespotter in my JC-60 and I love it.

Celestions are good speakers, but they're overpriced. You can likely get a way similar USA made Eminence for under $100.

Or just get the originals reconed.

If you're keeping the Bugera speakers anyways, let them break in a bit. No speaker sounds perfect right out of the box 'cause they're all stiff and stuff.

you definitely got to take into account that jazz choruses are pretty shimmery amps, and people usually love them for that. IMO Vintage 30's are easily some of the darkest speakers on the market. Which will definitely play nice if you want your amp to sound richer and a bit of a roll of on your high end. They sound great (i have them in my dr. z prescription), but they're reaaaaaaally dark. A studio i went to record in had a silverface twin like me, so i figured i wouldn't bring mine, because i'm a lazy idiot. Well, needless to say the twin had V-30's in it and my pedalboard hated the shit out of it. oh the horror.

That's exactly what I got in my JC60, albeit with a different speaker. But that amp reacted so nicely to the darker speaker. "Rich" is exactly the word I'd use to describe it. It still had that glorious shiny top end, but it filled out a lot nicer, kinda just sounded like the way it was supposed to sound. Just really thick and full and natural. Much more balanced.

and here you have it. i'm glad it sounds gnar sharpie, the dude in my band who usually plays his JC120 blew his speakers too, and has been using my Dr.z Since... this gives me an idea....

I'd go with Eminence or older JBLs.

Full range, clear, and not dark is a good thing with any of them.

For added tone, pre-owned from "Bob's Country Bunker" works well.
(that's what I pretend the terrible stencil on mine is anyway)

Last year we installed a pair of Eminence V128 speakers in a JC120. Its a good speaker and my go-to speaker to make any inexpensive amp sound better. If you want something more like the OEM Roland speaker go for the Jensen Mod.

I do actually not use much treble at all with my current band, but I wanna keep my tonal options open-- am really glad I didn't pull the trigger on dem Celestions. Eminence sounds like a good way to go. I'm gonna start researching them, but would like to hear all the opinions I can from all yallz. Thanks so much! Keep opinionating!
