I've thought about doing a JFET version of the muff.
I just don't see the point in doing a tube version of the Muff. What with all the hassle with the high voltage and all that. And you know it wouldn't sound as saturated as a low-voltage transistor fuzz.

I'm a big believer in doing things "just because you can". On the other hand, I'm often very lazy. If I can buy a bomb-ass pedal with 6 knobs for $80-ish, I'm unlikely to built it.
I guess maybe I've built SO MANY damn pedals now that I value the time differently?
I'm not poo-pooing the idea totally. I just think that for a similar amount of effort, and a reasonable amount more cash, you could have a tube amp project. Also, the did you see the schematic for supplying the required +250v to the circuit? The cost, I think, would be quite considerable... and it would end up sounding kinda like...a Big Muff.

I love crazy shit that is "just because". I just can't justify the extra cost and effort on this one.
Cool as hell idea, though.

I see whatcha mean. It's a neat thought, and if it could be adapted completely to submini's, it would be a bit more reasonable. But, y'know, it's gonna kinda be like a BMP. But, if someone jumps on this, they could hock it to blues lawyers as the "purest most analog Big Muff" or something.

With subminis, you could probably knock down the voltage needed to like 60v or so. Much cheaper!

If you can do it in two submini tubes, you could fit it in a pedal. I dont know what im talking about but isnt a pentode like a dual op amp, two in one?

Pentode is usually a power tube, and it's just a single. A lot of preamp tubes are dual triodes, which is like having two transistors in one package. So with a pair of dual triode tubes, you could do a tube Muff.

It'd be a cool to use as a dirty channel in a tube amp project!
I agree... it just seems impractical for a pedal, unless you could find a smaller way to do the power supply and use submini tubes.

Charge pumps aren't huge...MAX1771 would cover it.
It's those clipping diodes that would make me not want to do it... just seems wrong to use all those tubes then just clip the signal.

Doesn't using tubes instead of transistors totally defeat teh the point of having it as a pedal? Even if you used subminis, it would still have to be massive. Not to mention the power supply required. It would seem to me to be much easier, cheaper, and safer to just stick with what works. IF it ain't broke...
