I know the Muff style pedals are really popular here, and I'm feelin all lubby dubby on the Muff right now so I thought I'd make a thread about it. Let us discuss the Muff. Show us your Muffs, tell us about your favorite, etc.

i've owned a Black Sovtek and i've played the NYC version plenty of times.

The NYC had a pretty nice distinctive character when playing some higher notes, but it was a bit too compressed for me... also the mid-scoop... well i'm not really a fan of that.

The Black Sovtek was pretty cool, sounded pretty huge, but didn't cut through a rock trio so i ditched it... when i look back, i should've just turn the volume fucking high and let it roar, but whatever... btw anyone who has a Black Sovtek muff should put a Dan Armstrong's green ringer in front of it - worked for me, it got even huger sounding... it almost made me want to hunt down and kill a squirrel

This week i'm expecting a custom Green Muff from MadeByMike, i'll let you know if my penis got any bigger. It's custom in the means of design (pin-up girl, white box) and because i ordered a switchable mid boost (mids knob and a miniswitch to disengage it) - since the black sovtek, i'm kinda afraid of getting lost in the band again

i'd love to try a Pharaoh some day

I'm really into the Manx Loaghtan. I've owned like, fifteen Skreddy pedals - the Manx compares very favorably, IMO. :idk:

Wren and Cuff Pickle Pie "B" is my muff based pedal of choice. Its off a swollen pickle which is off a muff and so on. Its got a nice deep muff tone with a few mods in the mids that make it cut through very nicely.

Muffs? Yes, I think I've heard of those...

I like the FS36999/2n5133 Mike's Head Muffs. They're super smooth and intense.
Next up would be the 2n5187 PNP Mike's Heads -- I've had three of those and they were all real tight sounding.
I have a love/hate relationship with triangles -- some of them sound great, some not so much. I like em with FS36999/2n51333s. Only triangle I have right now is a 2n5133 Foxey Lady.

D*A*M Ram Head is excellent too.

I've owned an NYC reissue, a black russian and a little big muff, found that I disappeared in the mix with them all because they're all mid-scooped pretty heavily (I play bass). I then got a Blackout Musket v2, which is based on the green russian I believe. I found that the mids and focus knobs let me slice right through the mix and be heard. It sounds fantastic, and I highly recommend it for anyone who wants a russian muff that cuts through.

But in the end, it wasn't THE muff sound I've always had in my head. So I decided to try an IC Muff, which is supposed to have a bit of a gnarlier, harsher, less wooly tone. I ended up having MadeByMike make me an IC muff in the small MXR enclosure, with a tone bypass switch. Voila, exactly the big muff tone I always wanted. And when I want to cut through the mix, the tone bypass switch kills the mid scoop and blasts right through the band.

I'm right there with you bigchiefbc. The IC Muff is the sound I think of when I think of a Big Muff. I'm building one right now and I'm really excited to see how it turns out.

As of right now, my favorite Muff is my Skreddy Supa Tone. I really like it.

I've had an EQD Hoof and I really liked it in my bedroom but couldn't get it tp cut through at all in a band context.

I also have my trusty ol black Russian (first pedal I ever bought) which I don't use anymore but refuse to sell. It sounds pretty cool but not great IMO. I'm thinking of modding it. Anyone know of some cool mods? I want to make it sound nastier and I dunno.. Fuzzier?

I fucking LOVE black russians to the point where I have moved to stock piling them. The new york was too quiet and compressed for my taste. I am currently saving for an IC. The civil war though is the best IMO.
Side note: If anyone has a civil war they don't want, pm me.

Oh yeah and dev feel free to post your whole Muff collection and infinite Muff wisdom.

Hey bob do you notice a lot of difference in sound between them?

um... riiiiiight :erm:

Hey, BCBC... yeah i thought about Musket a lot, but i decided to try the MBM Green Muff... i don't have much experience with muff-ish pedals so i don't expect to hit the jackpot with my third muff, but it could happen :)

I've had a Black Russian, and own a Supercollider and a Grey Stache. Played around a bunch with a stock NYC muff and a Creamy Dreamer (?) modded one that my old guitarist had,.

Between the SC and the GS, I have no need to search out any other muff variants. I miss my black russian sometimes, but mostly because it was the first fuzz pedal I ever bought.

There is a fair bit of difference but, that is to be expected with sovteks. I only have one operational unit at the moment so I can't AB them but, the one I am currently using is a tad quieter but it has less treble, more mids and feels very tight. The non working one (currently undergoing experimental surgery) was very open and had a very punchy low end but really open and raspy highs. The ones I have had seem to fall nicely between the green and NYC in terms of sound but I would venture to say that they are a might bit louder than the green I had for a while.
