I am putting together a new drum kit around a set of late 60's/early 70's Ludwig Standards I've got.

I don't want to spend a whole lot on cymbals and the Dream brand has caught my eye.

Has anyone tried these out?

I used to be on drum forums a couple of years ago and the Bliss series (and I think Vintage Bliss too) got a lot of praise. They're more geared towards mellower styles though.

What kind of setup are you looking to get? I'd personally go to music stores and just hit everything and see what I liked. The semi-cheap (at least around here) brands like Istanbul etc have some nice things too if you know what you want.

Also, who needs separate crashes and rides and all that? Here's a video of me playing just an 18" Sabian HHX Stage Crash + hihat (and drums too, obviously). The sound is NOT good but just to show that it can be done..

I am looking for a basic rock set-up. I don't do metal or real hard-edged fast stuff. I am looking to get a decent dry ride cymbal, a pair of hats, and a crash. I am not into fancy set-ups. My ludwig kit is a bass drum, floor tom, and rack tom. I've got to buy hardware and a snare as well as the stuff that came with the kit is mostly trashed and was cheap to start with. Thinking DW 5000 hardware and a Pork Pie Big Black Snare (6.5" x 14")

Biggest problem for me is that there aren't many places to check out cymbals locally. Local places have the usual suspects and tend to only carry a very limited range. I have a Guitar Center about 100 miles away....it is the best place to check out cymbals but I don't think they've got the Dream stuff.

Ah, yeah they're nowehere to be found here either. Those Energy ones are sounding pretty nice judging by the youtube demos - nice and balanced. Couldn't really tell you how they'd do in a band mix but if I understand what it is you're going for I think they would do fine (you can always bitch until the amp gets turned down, but I'm guessing you won't have to).

If you're basically stuck buying online I'd say they are a very good bet (but once again I'm judging only from demos and what others have said). They definately seem impressive for the price and pretty consistently good between models (though I'm suspicious of some of the Contact series).

Those chinas are relevant to my interests.

My roommate/old drummer had one of their Bliss cymbals... a crash, or a ride, I don't remember.

But the thing sounded nice. Significantly nicer than you'd expect for the price.

My old drummer played them. I loved them. Incredibly thin, had a very unique wash. I've been wanting to get some for my kit, too.
