Hey, I'm looking for a compressor only to control peaks and keep levels from spiking while recording... I assume any compressor should be able to do this (right?)... I'm not really looking to get any tone or coloration... or "squeeeezing" from it, just a way to keep things from spiking... SUGGESTUMIFICATIONS?
Thank you.

I have a ROCKTEK (sp?) compressor. It gets the job done.
I only paid 10 or 12 bucks for it new from musiciansfiend. If you find it elsewhere it would definitely be less than $50.

The Behringer Limiter Enhancer is pretty decent for the price. Similar to a comp, but not exactly. Also the Boss CS2 is pretty damn good for a three knobber. There's one on Reverb for 40 right now too.

Yeah that thing is fucking awesome. Quiet, clean blend to retain more natural attack, goes from subtle to SQUASH. Bypass signal is good but slightly less than unity. That is the only possible criticism.

You definitely want a limiter! A compressor will change your dynamics dramatically while a limiter does exactly what you described. Go for a BOSS LM-2, if you can find one. Because of its age it might need new electrolytic caps (at least my first one needed a cap swapping a few years ago), but that's a very easy fix. I use my LM-2 for the very same purpose and it's ace! It leaves your original signal uncoloured if you leave the tone knob at 12:00. One of the best BOSS pedals ever made, and they are all MIJ.

Yes, but while Upchuck has once again been a troll and wasted everyone's time, you contributed to the forum and anyone looking for good/helpful info.

Seconded for awesomeness, regardless of Chuck's bumpyness.
A pedal I'll defs never sell, mostly because it's worth fuck all and hard to move in Australia, but also because of the awesomeness etc

Monoprice Compressor.
Downside is it can't get into funky rhythm guitar territory.

No, I am Spacelordmother on Talkbass but I haven't posted there in about 6 years. Maybe you should go bump one of my threads?
