I've been gassing for an awesome spitty snarly 60's fuzz... I know I like the MKII Tonebenders sound, the B:Assmaster, and the Maestro and Shin-Ei from clips. And the Fuzz Face type pedals I've played haven't been fugly enough. What are some of your favorite raw fuzz pedals? Kinda looking for that Dave Allan and the Arrows 'Blues Theme' sound, trashy 60's garage punk, noisy 90's punk like Pussy Galore... Prefer something that's made or cloned now, not expen$ive vintage pedals.

And if you know enough about builds, can you put two similar fuzz circuits in the same pedal and switch between them - like D*A*M does with the tonebender/ super bee? Or rather which two would be easy for a builder to do that with?

That's a Fuzzrite.
The Ashbass is supposed to be quite good -- haven't played one though.
There are a few other good clone builders. I'd give jerms a call.

I'll say it again: Catalinbread Merkin.

The Merkin is THEE 60's trashy fuzz sound to me. Like "2000 Pound Bee" by the Ventures trashy, just way more versatile. Plus you can get all kinds of neat tones with it if you use a voltage sag or dying battery emulator.

Except that is a Fuzzrite on the Davie Allen stuff. I don't think the 200 lb Bee was, but the Ventures used Fuzzrites later on to capture that sound.

OK, so the Fuzzrite is a sound I really like... What's another pedal with simliar design that could be switched like the '66/Super Bee?

the Fuzzrite is a pretty original design AFAIK whereas the '66 and SuperBee are both Vox TB related. maybe you could incorporate the tone control on the later Rosac/Sierra/Wehr Fuzzrites.

Just get any of the above newer ones... It's all about guitar, amp, fingers, and mojo's after that...

Since we're on the topic of '60s fuzz. Anyone care to identify this one for my untrained ears?

Closest I can think of is the Orpheum ... but you did say no expensive vintage pedals.
I'd chat with John Lyons and see what he can come up with for you. He does a few nice garagey sounding 60s fuzzes. Tell him what you want, he'll build it.

Always love this sound. Amazing record too.

^ almost certain that's a superfuzz into an amp already near meltdown. it has that same roaring quality on chords and the octave up is screaming in the leads. cool track!

^ That track is killer! +1 for Fuzzrites (I have a Jerms germanium one that kills kills kills.) Also +1 for Basic Audio / John Lyons. And I gotta put in a plug for the Glenn Wyllie Fuzzmite. Kind of a relative unknown around here, but he's a great dude (builds out of Chatham County, NC.) His Fuzzmite is a spitty, growling octave up fuzz that certainly holds its own against my Jerms Fuzzrite. Has a really nice tonal sweep on it too. And his enclosures are badass.
