so you know the sound that you get when you push an analog delay past its longest time setting, those really really lofi repeats? if i understand correctly, ring mods kinda sound like that when they are on very subtle settings. are there any you can recommend for someone whos not sure that they want one? i never really thought they were for me, but i kinda want to give a very simple one a shot.
if you dont know the sound im talking about i could record a sample

I think I know what you're talking about. Like a ring mod with the mix turned down low?
I've read about a ring mod kit on here called the Logan 5 or something. Maybe you could swoop on one of those for pretty cheap. I'm not sure but I think Way Huge/Dunlop and EHX might have some fairly inexpensive ring mods.
My friend's moog ring mod is pretty amazing but they're not really simple or something I'd recommend for just giving ring mods a shot.

Cool thing about the Moog is that you can also use it as an awesome square or sine wave tremolo (it can clock into sloer trem speeds.) But yeah, neither cheap nor simple.

I've got both the Copilot Android and the Montreal Assembly Ring Mod and they both do the dirty, gritty, lofi thing I think you're talking about. The EHX Ring Thing can get a lot cleaner and do a million other things but maybe that's not what you're looking for.

The Moog does my favorite tremolo I've ever heard out of a pedal. It just sounds good to me and I love the range of the speed knob. I wish every tremolo went that fast.

Another sweet thing abut the Moog is that it has a carrier input in the back, so you can use other audio signals to modulate your main signal rather than just using the circuit's built-in ring mod. So you could split your guitar signal and run an affected version of it into the carrier and have that FM your clean signal. Lots of possibilities here. The Copilot FX Caracol does this too, and it's awesome-sauce.

Yeah the whole setup with all the ins and outs is intense. Way too complicated for me to figure out but pretty sweet to have the options anyways.
Actually I'm sure I could figure it out, I just don't have the gear for it.
I'm feelin some major Moog love today!

Here's a demo of the Caracol with some MIDI pianos and stuff modulating a guitar. The changes in guitar tone that you hear are caused by the differences in modulation source and the fuzz settings on the Caracol. The modulation source is panned a little bit more left, and the modulated guitar is panned a bit more right.

Unfortunately I only have an iPhone so I can't listen to flash stuff.

I'm kind of on the fence concerning ring mods.
However, I'm not on the fence about fuzz, oscillation and pitch shifting, so a white fritter seemed like a good way to test out the ring mod and still get something I know I'll like in the other modes. And it's cheap! Chickity check the shark tank...

Fairfield Circuitry Randy's Revenge... they should be back this year.
I'm waiting.
I'm sure it will worth the wait.

I like that there's a mix knob on this it.

Or the Catalinbread Heliotrope (it's not a ring mod... but maybe...)

Ring thing, it'll tune automatically to the input signal, can be tuned low enough to be used both as a variable shape tremelo and a variable shape phaser. It has a tone knob for the ring mod so it can be set for crazy grainy ring mod and smooth harmonic ring modulation. Plus it has a fantastic pitch shifter in it.

All other things aside, I always found the EHX Frequency Analyzer to be one of the sweetest sounding ring mods. It just sounds so goddamned musical for a ring mod. And the filter switch is huge.

I Thinkkk, don't quote me on it, the Fairfield is just a Frequency Analyzer with more available components (more available doesn't mean worse for any Gear Page readers that come across this).
I've been considering ring mod to, the only put off is the power supplies... so i'm just going to have to design my own...
And right you are Teej, if you push an analog delay reallyyy far it does become a ring mod, a delayed one but a ring mod none the less, it's a pretty cool effect but due to the amount of delay a tad useless.
