Boss DD-3 as a stutter pedal - how?

Hey,

So I was watching this video

Take a listen to the solo, it hits around 1.20/1.25

The guy is turning on Boss DD's on and off to give the repeat stutter, I googled it and saw this interview about the recording of their new album just out - http://emusician.com/interviews/feature ... pressures/ and it says he has two DD-3's but I still don't get how it works

I mean, initially I thought he was using the Boss DD-3 hold function, but firstly it looks like he's clicking on and off vs depressing, i.e. it's a latched effect, and secondly the DD-3 hold afaik can only go as fast as 200ms, whereas that's a much faster effect. (The interview above does talk about him cascading one delay into the other but I don't think so here)

Then I thought - ok he must be using the regular delay - so I took out my DD-7, turned the feedback up to get the constant repeats, and got a nice quick delay - around 3 on 200ms or 9 on 50ms ish.

But whenever I do this, the moment I turn off the pedal, the feedback keeps going for 3-5 seconds after I've turned the pedal off.

And yet in the video, the moment he clicks off it goes off.

So I'm confused! Can anyone shed some light on it - as the hold can't go fast enough and the regularly delay has a feedback on my DD-7 so I don't know how his doesn't? Confusion!

If he's using two it could be that they are set to complimentary times to give the illusion of having a faster hold time :idk:

I don't know how he does it with just DD-3s but wouldn't putting any oscillating delay into a bypass loop work like that?

i think this has been up before. and as thezeng said - no trails. the dd3 doesn't have trails.

Oh right, so you're saying that whereas the DD-7 keeps going when you click off to continue the feedback as it were, the DD-3 ends when you click off regardless of the feedback?

Meaning he's doing it with a super quick delay time + lots of feedback and it simple goes off when he clicks off - which some might say is less 'advanced' but actually works perfectly for him to do this effect?

Oh and I should say, is this still the same on new DD-3's, it's not just the older ones? I.E. if I get a newer DD-3 I'll be good to go!

Yeah. The one I had, a newer one, had no trails, so there should be no problems. I had it stolen, and I miss it  - fortunately it isn't very expensive. It's a great pedal for what it does.

Oh yeah, and

Great, sounds just the ticket then and should get rid of my confusion - new-old technology love.

Also, that photo is AMAZING heh.

The sample/hold on my DD5 is a latching effect with a very fast response time. Here's me on my Algal Bloom and DD5 doing exactly this kind of thing: [soundcloud]http://soundcloud.com/sim-tut/fuzzhugger-algal-bloom-with-boss-dd-5[/soundcloud] The quiet part around 1:20 gives indication of how short/fast it can be.

it's not the hold function. it's a really quick delay time with a lower feedback, e. level all the way up. i can do this on my dd-5 or the dd-3 in my practice room.

Something like this was my guess as well.

See, when I tried to do this just now with a fast repeat and low feedback the repeats just kinda washed together or faded too quickly, and turning the effect off mid-riff like in the video it continued trailing. With the hold function I got nice crisp repeats that stopped on a dime. Either way, the DD5 will do this.

I was under the impression he was using a dd-6, on which you hold down the button to use the hold so he just clicks it and it samples and repeats that tiny little noise until he stomps again.

The DD-5/6/7 have trails but the DD-3 doesn't.

Therefore I reckon it's a DD-3 w/fast delay and essentially infinite repeats, that he turns off when he wants it off.

DD-3 doesn't have trails, so it's just a short delay time, volume and feedback cranked. Hold function does the same thing really, you just have to hold the pedal down for as long as you want it.

couldn't resist
