Ok, so I just plugged my 4545 straight into my bass rig so that I could give it a couple more goes (I was planning on getting rid of it because I wasn't getting what I wanted out of it). 4545 plugged in with a normal Boss 9v adapter, so nothing unusual. I noticed it wasn't doing anything when I engaged the pedal. I turned the knobs, flipped the switches and nothing. It was like I was plugged into the amp without any pedals. I started to freak a bit and pulled the back off the pedal. As soon as I did I was hit by a small cloud of smoke.

Upon closer inspection, it looks like the output jack has a wire that is a little brownish, like maybe it was melted somehow. It even smells like smoke still. What do I do???????? Never had anything like this happen with a pedal before. Help me Brian! HELP!!!!!!!!!

No but seriously. What can I do? This sucks.

Gut shot. You can't really see it, but the white wire coming from the board to the output jack has slight brown staining on it right where it meet the jack.

that's not good.
um ok please mail it to me and i'll figure out what's going on/build you a new one. i don't think that brownish stain is an issue, but i'll know when i see it. normal boss 9v adapter was center negative DC right? ok email me.

CRAZY STORY that totally happened to my fuck OD when plugged into it's own power supply. I threw away that supply, hooked it up to my onespot, and it's worked just fine ever since.

um i'll just throw this out there as well. i'm not really one for closing threads, especially when it's a reliability issue, but just so everyone knows a phone call (my number is on the website under the info section), email (brian@smallsoundbigsound.com) or even PM to discuss issues with a pedal is MUCH preferred to a separate thread. not saying that's what happened in this particular situation, but sometimes people use the wrong power supply, plug things in backwards, etc. sometimes it's my fault - a wire breaks, something shorts out somehow, etc.

anyways, it's always tough to know the problem immediately and i hope that in the future people feel comfortable just writing me directly, rather than taking it to a public forum. i'm almost always quick to respond, especially when something is not working properly... big hugs.

Well, there's really nothing much left to say. The pedal works fine on an actually trustworthy power supply. The untrustworthy one I used fried a pedal previously, so when the Fuck kept working perfectly even after producing smoke, I took all of this as a sign that your pedals are not only excellent sounding, but also apparently immortal. Basically, you created the Highlander, and I commend you for it. I understand why you wouldn't want negative sounding talk on a public forum, but I figured my story was, if anything, positive. I'd love to email you if you still want any more details, but I'm not quite sure if there are any more.

ah ok it fried another pedal previously! that's different...
well all my pedals have reverse polarity protection as well as some other filtering, etc. so you may have burned something out with the weird supply, but yeah it should work fine - i would, at some point like to replace whatever got charred in there though... just for longevity's-sake. what are the details on the first supply, if you still have it? brand? ac or dc? voltage it puts out? mA rating? etc etc. also what pedal did it fry?

hey, i'm the mod. no need to delete, unless it makes anyone uncomfortable... it makes me a little uncomfortable, but i'm into transparency. shit happens and in my opinion it's more important how one deals with that shit...

i've built a lot of pedals and only a few of them have had issues - as well, the majority of those were from a footswitch failing - probably only 2 or 3 have been because i've done something dumb. when those issues arise i've done everything i can to make sure the person that i'm dealing with was/is happy in the end.

i'm waiting for jwar to post the "brian was super rad about this and hooked me up awesomely because of the inconvenience."
when that happens *wink* i'll rename the thread for clarification.

Oh, the power supply was a travel power supply from best buy that I had lying around. Not sure of the name, but it had a bunch of planes on he packaging. And, it previously friend an EQD Sound Shank, which was thankfully repairable.

Just for some clarification on my side, Brian has been totally cool about this. I apologize if making this thread was the wrong route to go. I thought it'd be a fast way to get to you, but I should have e-mailed. No idea how or why this happened, and not a big deal either. Shit happens sometimes (usually to me) but sometimes to other people too. lol
