Most Hated Effects

Hey, thought it might be interesting to talk about effects and sounds we just can't stand and maybe people could give examples of those effects used in cool ways. In this video, Gearmandude says he hates reverb:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1y-Pa-Ns ... ure=relmfuwhich I thought was ridiculous, being a heavy abuser myself.
I'm a big reverb, delay, overdrive, fuzz guy. However, I hate chorus and flangers. They sound SUPER cheesy to me and retro, but not in a cool way. Like an awful 80's music way.
Feel free to contribute

I don't care for chorus much by itself. It can add loads of awesome in conjunction with other effects, however.

I'm generally not a fan of super synthy fuzz. I don't like velcro fuzz either. But I think this is because I've only ever used these on bass and I can't stand the way it sounds; it's probably OK on guitar/other stuff.
I hate the sound of a DS-1 by itself, I know it's been used in a billion songs though.
I'm with you on the chorus and flanger, but they can be used well with other effects.

Yeah, maybe I'm noobing it up but what sounds good with chorus or flanger? I generally don't know what this would sound like because I never wanted to buy one!

Both effects are time based... Chorus is like a "choir" which is an attempt to thicken up your sound by adding a couple delayed tracks to the original... A flangers sound comes from the days of recording on tape... If you are playing back two decks into a third and you place your finger on the tape flange, which is the edge on the tape reel, it will slow down a little and lag slightly behind creating a "flanging " effect... They can be used in a million different ways but subtly is key as in anything... Saying they're just old sounds is doing a little bit of a disservice to them, kinda like saying Fuzz sucks cause it's the most basic torn speaker sound from the 60's...

I hatehatehate standard chorus and flangers.
However, I agree 100% with Sonidero - subtlety is absolutely key. They can be awesome when used with a low blend so that the effect isn't ridiculously over the top.

I hate the MicroPOG... I sold mine last year, I can't stand one.
If you have good fuzz in your chain, this pedal suck all the tone even when bypass... and it don't even sound good on it's own.
That's my two cents

chorus and flanger usually sound shit to me... but i've heard them used very well (aka i shat myself)
i have to say i'd consider having Stereo Electric Mistress on my board if it hadn't the stupid whatever-they-call-it "frozen flanger" sounds for the first half of the rate knob or so... i!d appreciate slow flanging... nevertheless it can sound really beautiful with reverb and delay
Fulltone Choralflange should be good for me then... but it's not easy to get Fulltones here in europe for decent prizes and ot just seems kinda expensive to me in general

I don't know if there's any effect I particularly "hate", atleast as far as the majority of effects are concerned, but one that's just way too gimmicky (i.e. it seems you'd only use it for the sake of being weird) is that 'talking filter' effect..like on the beginning of "Kill the guy with the ball" by Steve Vai (the..Ai-Yai?..Yai!..Yai Yai Yai!" stuff...

Hey don't blame the gear, blame the lack of talent!

The Line 6 Delay Modeller! How the hell do you use it?! Turn it on with the 'mix' control at 12 o'clock and your volume drops! Never mind that you can't get it in time with a track...

I hate some chorus-effects, more a flanger guy, but a chorus before all the dirt sounds awesome as I heard it in a friends band!:) I always hated envelope filters, but it became clear that was because everybody only played funkriffs in youtube demoes..
