P90 guitars

This past weekend I played a Les Paul Special, and I think I fell in love with P90's. They seem like beefier, ballsier single coils, which I had read about, but it was something else to experience it with my own ears. I've never really gotten along with humbuckers (the two electrics I have had are strats), and this seemed like the perfect compromise.

Soooo, I want to get a guitar with P90's. The Les Paul Special I played is apparently a Guitar Center exclusive from late last year, and is kind of more than I would like to pay at 999. The SG Classic is the same price, but there is also the faded version at 699 and this new "tribute model" at 799. Another one that looked interesting is the Fender JA-90. What else should I look at? I definitely want two pickups, so Juniors and the like aren't in the picture. I prefer something I can play first...

i spent a fair bit of time looking at P90 guitars before i bought my Tokai. there's an Epiphone Les Paul Special out now that's quite inexpensive and looks good, and is also widely available and thus easy to test. the Canadian importer using the name Dillion also has/had a decent-looking version. Hofner has/had a couple of revisions of a P90 mahogany slab guitar called the Colorama which seem to show up in used shops/on eBay a lot. or if you feel like a project, soapbar P90s will drop into a Gretsch Pro Jet with a minimum of hassle. i wound up getting a Tokai singlecut Les Paul Special because i wanted a Japanese-made LPS with the combination bridge/tailpiece rather than the Tunomatic/stop tail combo that's ubiquitous now. Tokai and Edwards LPSs are available on eBay; the Edwards typically have Duncan P90s.

IT FUCKING RULES.

They have a used one for $105.

They say the toggle switch is broken so it's probably a $10 fix.

I may have to buy this myself.

Edit: I just bought this myself! :joy:

Haha nice! Thanks for the suggestions so far. I'll definitely try out the squier and epiphone this weekend. I'll keep my eye out for the tokai/dillion/edwards/etc., but hopefully there will be something I can try myself.

Anyone have any experience with the old PRS SE Soapbar guitars?

I'm still trying to figure out the tonal difference of a mini humbucker and p90. Either in the neck with the tele bridge is probably a great combo.

Yeah, I've wanted to drop a p90 in the bridge of my Schecter semi-hollowbody for a while now.

lol, I'm pretty sure this is the most pointless comment ever. Just lettin' y'all know.

Yeah, I saw bloo's guitar (and have seen that model on the agile site), and I'm worried about the location of the selector switch. I strum and pick towards the neck, and it looks like it would get in the way there.

Anyone know what a good price for a Tokai LP special is? I found one for 300 but I don't know how much they usually go for...

There's a couple versions of humbucker sized p-90's out there, if you've got something to put them in, or if you can find something inexpensive to put them in. I'm looking at getting a set of P-Rails by Duncan when I get some money, they will cost me more than my guitar did, but whatever I love it, so that's cool. It's an Ibanez Jet King, you can get them cheap, and they are well made for the money, plus if you get one and hate it you can always just let me know, I'm always interested!

This guitar is so much win. I recently picked one up and it quickly became my main player. Great guitar!

the guys over at harmonicdesign.com make the best p90's i've ever heard.

also, they make a p90 that drops into the tele bridge position. no modification. and it sounds amazing. which automatically makes them my favorite.

Thats just the squier with a different headstock, a glossy neck and a different colored body.
