For Post-punk I've got John McGeoch of Magazine/Siouxsie in mind plus the Cure - especially the 17 Seconds Album.
For Shoegaze I keep hearing "Alison" by Slowdive in my head.

Any thoughts on Flangers?

Yah, pretty mutch or a Flanger Hoax, or if your budget is tight, then a stereo elctric mistress. I gots me one, and it's quite alright.

GuitarGeek has been known to be wrong, but they identified no discreet flangers in any of the Slowdive Stage setups. Might be digital multieffects stuff. Or the TC phaser might have been a flanger.
Boss BF-2 Flanger was a fave for Robert Smith, and I always did like that Hyaena album he did with the Banshees.

I love the Flanger I got from Culture Jam! It handles all my flanging needs. From old MXR to the A/DA stuff. Love it.

You don't want a flanger hoax it's way too complicated.

The modulation on soft focus is more a chorus than flanger...I'm too lazy to turn mine on, but it's called "orchestral" or "symphonic" or something like that.
Methinks with a flanger you want something that's through zero though.
I think that cause I want something that's through zero...

the TC SCF chorus/flanger works well for the Slowdive thing with the speed and depth slowed way down...i haven't heard a flanger i like better. i suspect that for flanging the actual live Slowdive sound relied on the guitarists' Korg and/or Yamaha rack multi-effects units; an awful lot of the flanging on their records sounds like it's added globally or applied to parts of the mix as a post-production effect.

SEM i can't recommend because you have to turn the rate pretty fast to get out of the "freezed flanger" teritorry
it sounds really sweet with the flanger and chorus mixed, i was actually surprised how much i liked it... but i didn't want it because you can't get slow rates from it

Yeah that's a flanger. I feel like most flangers will do that. Usually people call that the "jet" or "airplane" flange sound, so you could search for flangers with those associated terms.
