Buying Music When You Have No Idea What It Will Sound Like

My friend and I went into f.y.e with intent to find a band we'd never heard of and bought this CD used for $3. We assumed it'd be electronica/ambient or space rock or something. We put the Cd in our car stereo and out same this fuzzy distorted hardcore punk riff... completely unexpected. The CD has 9 tracks and it was finished by the time we got home. Although it was hardcore punk there were sections where 4 or 5 guitars are going at once in a noisy break/interlude which aligns with the CD's spacey art. Almost as if it had a bit of shoegaze influence. Totally awesome, and one of the best purchases I've made recently.
Artist: Spacehorse, Album: Spacehorse

I've always wanted to do this, but then I cheat and listen to them in store and I've never liked them.
Also, I love that my record store lets anyone listen to any CD before they buy. So sweet.

I bought a CD without listening to it, once, just to try it. It was a CD by some band called the Silver Jews. Never again. I threw it away when I got home.

I do this all the time. I have found so many good albums.
Last ones were Songs for the Disappeared, by Kevin Hufnagel, Old One, by Old One, FUCKERFUCKER, by Devi Ever, and Constellations, by Balmorhea.

I'm talking bands you've never heard of. You have a preconceived idea of what Radiohead sounds like.

I bought a CD from a cute girl once. Because she was really cute and selling them, and it had a cool cover. In the process of the transaction she mentions that the lead singer is her boyfriend.

I get home and it's horrible, horrible screamo that they have randomly inserted sax samples into instead of guitar solos.

Threw it out.

Lesson learned. don't buy CDs from cute and persuasive members of the opposite sex.

Back in the days before mp3, I used to buy albums based on how rad the cover artwork was. I should start doing that again...

I got a fair amount of these based on cover art or just by the instruments listed... After awhile you get good at finding unheard stuff you KNOW you'll like... I hope kids today still want album art...
