I was advised to post this here,

I just got my VFM in the mail and I love it, but even with the volume maxed its just below unity gain. Are all VFMs like this, or is something wrong with mine?

hey man,
i had this happen on a GZ once... when i was modding it i blew out one of the trannies (mpsa18 i think) and had to swap it.... you ever build a probe? not the kind you stick in your bottom.... but the kind you use to follow the circuit path and find components that are crapped....? kind of a pain but a good tool to have....

I ordered a BYOC probe sometime ago, never made it, couldn't find the manual on their website anymore

its just a .1uf cap connected to the tip of the jack, and the ground connected through alligator clips to the sleeve of the jack

While keeping an input on it, try backing some stuff on, particularly gain and clipping. Don't know the pedal, but sometimes a distorting device can swamp itself to the point that it drops output. You might just be getting too much of a good thing.
