I have a Traynor 4x10 that I've been trying to get rid of for awhile. It use to be my dream amp, just love 4x10s, but now, I'm partial to 12s. Anyway, I've noticed that the tone of the amp is starting to sound cold to me. Not any sparkle or warmth. This occurred to me after playing a Silverface Twin Reverb and a Mesa 5:50. They both had 12s, so I'm wondering if that's all it is or should I swap out tubes and speakers before I rule it out.

The Celestions 10s are rubbish. I think Celestions sucks beside Greenbacks. I don't know a thing about tubes but the guy put a new set of 6l6s in before I traded. Said it added warmth.

Will a set of Jensens and different tubes solve the problem or is it the amp?

Well some new speakers and a new set of decent tubes + a biasing will improve the sound of the amp but. If you want decent speakers, the cost of 4 of those + the cost of the tubes + tech work isn't worth it if you've fallen out of love with the amp. You might as well sell the Traynor and put the money you'd be spending on the speakers + tubes together with that money and get something you like even more!

I think if I do some custom stuff to it, it'll more than likely sell easier, if I do sell it.

You'd be surprised. Unless it's someone who knows their stuff, mods and customisation tend to put a lot of people off because they don't know exactly what they're getting. Obviously something like a speaker upgrade isn't quite drastic enough to come into that category.

you can improve the sound of an amp substantially by changing tubes, but you can't really change the general character of the amp...e.g. a Twin Reverb may be a bit more or less barky or sparkly, but it'll still sound like a Twin. to really optimize things you have to "tube roll," i.e. try lots of different tubes in order to find what works best for that particular amp. if you sell the amp, you won't want to sell the upgraded tubes with it; you won't get as much in increased value as the tubes cost, especially if you go to NOS tubes. this is also true for upgraded speakers. the four new RI Jensens you pay, say, $200 for won't add nearly that much in resale value to a 4x10 Traynor. i wouldn't sink a lot of money into amp tweaking unless i was pretty committed to the amp...i spent a couple of hundred bucks rolling preamp tubes on my Laney, but i was happy with the amp and speakers already.
